“Let's try this again.
Multiple sources confirmed that AD Chris Del Conte and head football coach Tom Herman met with the football team last night about The Eyes of Texas controversy.
It was conveyed to the players that they will be expected to stand during the school song.“

Backstory:
The student athletes wanted the song gone. That didn’t happen. Now the University is saying not only is the song staying, but you are going to stand for it. As you can imagine......backlash

Is there a story behind this or something?

What do they have against eyes?

That should turn things around

quote:
The eyes of Texas... are upon you
The eyes of Texas... are upon you
Now here come the girls
In that pretty red Ford
Yeah they're packing the girls
In that pretty red ford
And out of the engine
Came the flame with a name
It burned up my mind
It made me insane
The eyes of Texas
Are upon you
I put on my boots And I got down to work
Yeah I sang her a song
And I got down to work
And out of the engine
Came the flame with a name
It burned up my mind
It made me insane
The eyes of Texas
Are upon you
Get me a bottle
Get me a smoke
I gotta kick back
Gotta let it all go
In the middle of nowhere
Is where I want to be
In the shade of the pines
Is where I wanns be
Here are the lyrics.

I mean if you listen to it the lyrics have a serious 1984 vibe going on.

The "Yellow Rose of Texas" was a black woman

the best of this whole thing is the fact that none of these student athletes would find the song racist if that hadn't been told it's racist

It started when the student athletes “demanded” that UT get rid of the song.
UT gave in to other stuff but not that because the alumni weren’t having that.
Now they are also demanding that the athletes stand for the song

Its sang to the tune of I've been working on the railroad. Which was an old minstrel show song.
So its gotta be canceled and sheeiiit

The Eyes of Texas," which is played before and after every Longhorns football game, has come under scrutiny in recent years because it was first performed in a minstrel show, which featured blackface performances, in 1903.
Ok then. Something that happened in 1903 is pissing off college kids in 2020. Got it.
