Pony car enthusiasts of the OT

I want to purchase a Mustang, and I sort of have myself looking at the 2008 GT Deluxe and GT Premium. Not locked in on that, but seems to be a good price range with a good selection between 60k - 100k miles. I don't want a total project car, but one where I can perform performance and cosmetic upgrades and reasonable maintenance.
What I'm looking for is sort of the definitive book or books on Mustang that performs a deep dive into each model year, the codes and issues to look for when shopping for a particular model.
I want this to be my son's first car. He's 14, and can start student driving in March. He's saved up for this purchase and continues to save, so I want him involved in the research and decision-making since he will be involved in the upgrades and maintenance. The Internet has tons of information, but a written reference in-hand would be really helpful to study.

If it were me I'd look at '01 to '04 cars over the '05 to '09.
I have a soft spot for the '01 Cobra and '03-'04 Mach 1 unless you wanted to drop the money of a Terminator.
If you have your heart really set on the newer one, I'd look for a Shelby GT or a Bullitt.

1966 Mustang (too old for a kid's first car):
You can easily find most parts for Mustangs, which is good. I'm not a big Mustang fan, but I've kept this one because it has no issues and any parts are readily available.

When you get it, bring it and your kid to an autocross so he can learn some car control around cones in a parking lot. Learn what the limits of the car are instead of on the streets. And keep it away from crowds.

We were taking a few cars for a country drive. My nephew, who had just gotten his license, was driving the Mustang. We turn from one FM road to another. I look in my rear view mirror and my nephew misses the turn and keeps going straight. Turns out that some brake component failed and the car had zero brakes.

Visit a trusted mechanic or mechanic shop and ask for them to one over the vehicle. Have seller meet you at the shop for a neutral location as well. If you were closer to NOLA I’d send you exactly where to go as a buddy of mine has done this for many people at his location.
