Al.com

This is a first step in reimagining our coverage of crime and justice.

Beginning today, AL.com will no longer publish mugshots as part of its crime and justice coverage, with a few exceptions. Exceptions can include when a suspect is arrested and accused of committing capital murder, corruption by public officials or crimes involving a breach of public trust. And, we’ll use them when a search is ongoing after a violent crime or in unusual instances when the mugshot is of compelling public interest.

I said this yesterday, but posting mugshots en masse of people without context, stories, or convictions is a pretty abhorrent practice.
It isn't racist, it is fricked up for all races.
Unfortunately, a lot of innocent people are arrested. Those people who have charges thrown out or vindicated upon investigation still have their names and pictures dragged through the mud for the entire community to see.
In 2020 and with our technology, those pictures never disappear. It can legitimately be life ruining.
I think this part is fair though:

Correct. I've never understood the practice to begin with.
What's upsetting is these news outlets using this as an opportunity to virtue signal vs. doing what was right in the first place.

I am completely on board with the media having a more conservative approach. They have zero accountability ATM.

def the right thing to do in theory. It's very hard to get a fair trial when the public perception is being skewed by mugshots, perp walks, etc. But ultimately, very few cases go to trial and not many people are looking at al.com, newspapers, or news stations.

Saban has completely lost control of his state.

The criminal's name will say it all.

People used to be ashamed of their actions. Get arrested messing with street walkers or accused of theft etc would shame others from participating in those nefarious activities. Today...not so much. It's a badge of honor!

Ha! You can read the arrest records name and 90% of the time determine the racial makeup of the perp. Don’t believe me? Try it.

I think you missed the point.

I've been saying for years that mugshots on local stations involving the 3 big crimes, rape, robbery, & murder, daily reinforces the image.
So not facing the elephant in the room we can continue the problem and continue the downhill snowball run.
Mugshots don't fit the narrative.

I agree with this completely. Plus these people haven't been adjudicated yet their mugshot is out there for ever. Its a fricked up practice.

Great point.
I hope that falls under “compelling public interest”
