The prescription opioid epidemic is not new. It began when Pharma rolled out and aggressively marketed time-released opioids like Oxycontin, driving “pill mills” that distributed as many as 9 million Oxys in a six-month span.

Opiod overdoses have surpassed car wrecks as the leading cause of death for young Americans.

They surely don't want you to know that, and it is an astounding fact.

I took one after surgery, didn't like the way they made me feel and decided on the pain over addiction and being high. I crushed them all and trashed them.

Personal choices.

what about numerous people who use Opioids and do not become addicted?

This is all of a sudden an Epidemic because Prince fricking overdosed.

How about this, when you are prescribed medication, do not take it upon yourself to exceed the prescribed dosage.

I agree, maybe its all genetic but a helluva a lot of people must share the genetic trait, or simply fall victim... It would be good to know those numbers though for balance.

You're an idiot.

From the CDC:

quote:

During 2014, 47,055 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States. Since 2000, the age-adjusted drug overdose death rate has more than doubled, from 6.2 per 100,000 persons in 2000 to 14.7 per 100,000 in 2014 (Figure 1). The overall number and rate of drug overdose deaths increased significantly from 2013 to 2014, with an additional 3,073 deaths occurring in 2014 (Table), resulting in a 6.5% increase in the age-adjusted rate.

Legalize cannabis and deaths from opioid overdoses will drop. In states where cannabis is legal opioid related deaths have dropped by 25%.
Unlike opioids, no one has ever overdosed on cannabis. In fact, it is practically impossible to do so.

Didn't even finish the article due to the obvious inaccuracies.

Bottom line, some people like to get high however they can and this currently is a big thing. I'm sure there are a few docs prescribing inappropriately just to get the business but I'd bet it is a VERY few.
And everyone id all indignant about the docs writing these meds, but then get mad when they take the wife, hubby, kid, mom to ER for an acute back pain and get told to take Advil.

there is a wonderful substitute for opiates out there called kratom, it has zero verified overdoses or deaths from it, it mimics opiates in that it affects pain receptors in the brain but will not cause respiratory failure. There are is a lot of anecdotal evidence from heroine addicts that it curbs their cravings where in the problem lies, the drug treatment mills hate it for that reason it hurts business and they have the ear of law enforcement and law makers so six states have banned it even after Florida ran an extensive study and confirmed it safe for human consumption, just ridiculous but the failed war on drugs really has no direction.

and we're just hearing about it now. seriously this is the second time in two days I've seen one of these articles and it's pure demagoguery. Prior to yesterday not a peep.

Take fricking responsibility for your own behavior. Don't take more pills than you are prescribed.
