OT Photographers -Camera Recs

*Update-I bought a Nikon Z5. Looking for recs for a good hiking/backpacking travel tripod*
I am looking to purchase a camera for astral photography that’s also good for general shots as well. Was thinking Nikon d7500, but am hearing they will be discontinued within 2 years. Should I look at Nikons mirror less cameras? Would you recommend another option. I would like to stay under 1500$
TIA

I've been eyeing a couple of Nikon UPSKRT 9000 sneaker cameras but my old ones are still working fine.

Probably the Canon EOS RP. Full frame and the common EF mount. Not a lot of features you don't need for what you're doing

Don't get a D7500--just imo.
Literally any brand mirrorless is pretty awesome now: Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji etc.
If that's your total budget, try to get a decent lens (50 prime, etc.) for 500 ish and the camera for 1000. If going Nikon, the Z5 body is like 1200. Can probably pick up a good used Z6 for under 1K (their focus is annoying though).
If you get good at it, you can upgrade the camera later, and you'll already have a solid, compatible lens, which is just as important as the camera.

Don't buy mirrorless, get a solid point and shoot from Sony or Lica

I'm very into wildlife and nature photography but I am also a cheap bastard. I still use a canon rebel t3i with a cheap 75-300 lens. Still take good pictures though. I just need to pony up and buy something nice. Not a good hobby to have if you're a cheap bastard.

All camera lifespans are under 2 years.
Astro and DSLR for under $1500, doesn’t mix.
If you want to start with mirrorless, you need to significantly increase your budget.

If youre looking for the best APS-C sensor mirrorless, get Fujifilm. Best quality by a long shot.

I’ll be the contrarian. If you want a bargain get a fuji, if you want a long term relationship get Canon, Nikon, Sony.

At $1,500 I am very happy with my Sony A7iii.
Mirrorless, full frame, good for general photography and specialty applications also.
With a lens adapter you can also pick up some nice used glass in the old Sony G mount and use it on the A7iii's E mount platform.

Crop sensor?? Fuji beats anything in that class and is a great value, but is no bargain. The XH2 body only cost as much as the new Sony A7 IV full frame.
I've never heard Fujifilm cameras called a bargain. They are built like tanks though and have the best kit lenses.

I wouldn’t worry about buying a camera that’s going to be discontinued in 2 years. If you’re going to put the time into learning how to use your camera, buy a used Canon 5D mark III for $600 and buy a couple nice used lenses. $1500 isn’t going to get you much in the land of mirrorless cameras.
If you do go mirrorless, Sony has the most third party support for lenses so with a $1500 budget I would go with Sony.
The D7500 is a crop sensor camera. If you really want to do astrophotography, I would stay with a full frame. Given the same pixel density, the pixels themselves are larger so they collect more light.

quote:Wrong. You can use an EF to RF lens mount adapter from Canon and use EF glass (coming down in price while everyone is shifting to mirrorless). Save more, and use knock off lense that are cheap on Facebook Marketplace and eBay.

Buy a used Nikon D850 off of eBay from sellers in Japan. Cheaper than US sellers - plus Japanese sellers are very reliable and trustworthy.
Since there’s a mad rush to buy mirrorless, traditional DSLR’s are dropping in price. I really don’t see what all the shouting’s about in regards to mirrorless.

I think Canon stopped allowing third party autofocus lenses on the RF platform. Thats a real bummer.

At least with Canon's mirrorless there are workarounds (adapter, existing glass and plenty of used glass). I've got an R5 and my EF24-70 works just great with the adapter. Canon's pricing for their RF lenses are not higher, and sometimes less, of the cost of their EF lenses. I don't feel any pain because Canon is protecting their IP.
Now, Tesla, there's no option. That's beside the fact that it's stupid to tow a boat with a battery powered car.

Mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (MILCs) have surpassed single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras in pretty much every way. Generally, I think Sony has become the main innovator, although Nikon and Fuji also sell some nice MILCs, and Canon is the biggest seller in this segment too--but Canon locks out native (as opposed to adapted) third-party lenses. So what to get? Some generally-good options in the general vicinity of $1500:
Sony A6400 + 18-135mm lens kit for $1298 ( B&H)
Sony A6600 + 18-135mm lens kit for $1798 ( B&H)
Nikon Z50 + 16-50mm & 50-250mm two-lens kit for $1247 ( B&H)
Canon R10 + 18-150mm lens kit for $1279 ( B&H)
Now astrophotography is something of a world unto itself, and I have little knowledge of this niche. You sure you don't want to go first class with an increased budget to $10,800 for the camera ( DPReview) / $50,000 for a complete rig ( DPReview)?

Thank you for the detailed response, and to all others who took the time to respond.
I plan to use the camera in colder conditions (below 20 degrees at times) and I’m seeing some reviews say the Nikon Z50 doesn’t perform well at low temps.
I’ll do more research in the other options you posted (excluding the $50k set-up). :)

Don't believe they are made anymore, but they are out there for sale on the secondary market. It has H-Alpha sensitivity, and 30X focus magnification.

One big advantage I’ve found is the E-shutter mode. Totally silent and no wear on any moving shutter parts.
It has limitations though when shooting indoors under led or fluorescent lights you get banding in the images.
