Kids today asking for expensive Christmas gifts

My 15y/o son is asking for a PlayStation 5 this year which is a $500-$800 item. He never really asked for anything every year and he's always been happy with the gifts he has received.
I know times are different than they were back when I was a kid but the most expensive gift that I ever remember asking for was a BMX bike from K-Mart.

Asking for a Nintendo was basically the same thing. Items are just more expensive now.

This was my thought. A $200 Nintendo console would be $500 in today’s dollars.

At its launch in the late 80s the NES cost in $100 range. that's right about $500 on todays dollars.
That base playstation at launch was around $300. Which again is right in that $500 range in todays dollars.
Inflation sucks... but his ask is pretty much in line with what most kids are asking for and receiving.
Obviously it's your financial decision.

Get it for him if you can afford it. I'm sure he's a great kid and doesn't give you trouble. It's nice to make a family member truly happy sometimes. I'm sure your old man sacrificed something to give you a gift one time you really wanted that he thought was frivolous.

My younger brother and I received an Atari back when they first came out. We didn't ask for it though. I'm sure my dad paid a nice price for that but he was just trying to make my mom look bad since they were recently divorced

I am pretty sure the original NES was $150 or something when it came out. Technology cost + inflation since 1988 probably about $500-$600.
Same thing happened to the price of regular shoes too

Is he the only kid you have?
Usually a PS5 is a family gift for us.

If you think 500 for a PlayStation is expensive, wait until he wants to take a prom date to dinner.

I asked for a Go Cart one year in the 1970’s. I was probably about 12.
Mom didn’t even laugh at me, she made angry eyes and snorted.
I got a board game and some socks.

Yeah it would be hard to do a family gift in that case!

I used to beg my mom for $10-$20 to go out on for the whole weekend.
His dinner date with his gf cost me $100 recently. I guess I'm just an old tightwad lol
