I can not make my mind up between Oia or Fira for 3 nights and 3.5 days in early October for me and my girfriend. I already have a hotel picked if we stay in Fira but not one in Oia. It will be our first time to Greece and this is the last leg of our trip. Oia seems to be nicer/more upscale but I have read mixed reviews on stuff being open in October. If we stay in Fira we will still go to Oia as well as vice versa if we stay in Oia. Any advice? Would love hotel recs in Oia as well.
TIA

I don’t think I’m much help but we’re going in early June for our first time and we booked at a place called Absolute Bliss in Imerovigli .

If you’re planning to go frequently, it doesn’t matter as both have breath taking views of the caldera. But if it’s a once in a decade/ lifetime kinda trip, might as well stay in Oia. It’s a notch above and we didn’t feel like missing out if we didn’t see Fira( still went a day to check it out bc had a car rental).

We stayed at Hyatt Canavas Suites ( Hyatt pts). Great place and breakfast.

Just from my own research I would stay in Imerovigli over Fira

I think I am leaning more towards Oia the more I research, we can still go down to Fira for a day as its not a big island. Im trying to decide between Secret Suites, Andronis Arcadia, or Katikies Villas for our stay.

We’re going for the first time this coming May. 3 nights in Santorini and we are staying in Thera. Have dinner reservations in Oia one night and will spend an afternoon there to catch a sunset. Other than the view, Oia seems to be isolated from the rest of the island- at least that’s what I’ve gathered from my research.

We stayed in Fira the first week of April last year, and personally, I would stay in Fira as it's centrally located to most of what you want to do on the island. If you rent a car, it's only about a 20 min trip to Oia and about 15 min away from some really good wineries to the south.

ETA: We stayed at the Aria Suites FWIW

We leave MSY on Friday May 19. Flying MSY-EWR-FRA-JTR. Long arse day. Arrive in Santorini 16:30 local time on Saturday.
3 nights in an AirBnB in Thera. We have a half day private car tour of the island one day, then a half day catamaran rented as well. We have all of our evenings open, as well as a full day to relax and go at our pace.

Then we take a ferry to Naxos- 3 nights in another AirBnB in Stelida. We plan on doing a beach day and maybe some hiking. Naxos seems to be a more laid back island.

We take a late ferry to Athens for 3 more nights. Really about a day and half to explore as we have an early flight out on our last day-May 29. Nothing lined up yet in Athens, but will do the obvious sites and hopefully a nice meal or 3.

We fly home ATH-IAD-MSY. I played around with our itinerary, and from the advice on this board we did an open jaw to keep from backtracking, especially with ferries. Decided to go straight to Santorini first so we can have the easier connections going home through Athens. This will be our biggest trip to date- both length of stay and length of flights. We've done several Europe trips and I'm hoping to push it a little further in the next few years.

Nice. Sounds like a solid plan.

We fly IAH to Athens on June 1. It’s a pretty good flight with a layover in Paris I believe. Gonna spend the first day/night in Athens very close to the Acropolis and some other points of interest. Taking an early morning high speed ferry (sea jets) to Santorini and spending 3 days there in Imerovigli. Not really sure on activities there other than some sort of boat tour I’m sure.
Then we will high speed ferry it again for Naxos for 3 days. Staying near Agia Anna at a place called Avgoustos suites. Really just wanting to kick back there and relax on some nice beaches. Will ferry back to Athens on the 9th and stay right on site at the Athens airport at the Sofitel before our early flight home. Really looking forward to it.

Neither. Imerovigli is the most beautiful and most quiet.

Wherever you go, eat the tomato fritters. Also, visit the Black Beach area if you have time.

I’d say Oia over Fira. Fira is where all the cruise ships come in and Oia is where all those people go. Both are crowded at peak times.

Would you rather watch the sunsets in your hottub with a drink in hand or wait for hours elbow to elbow with the Insta-posers on the steps? Before the cruise crowds get to Oia, it’s awesome. Very quiet and relaxed. You can walk down the steps and swim out to St Nickolas Chapel. There’s a hike between Oia and Fira that’s about 10 miles but it’s a great way to spend a day away from people.

3 nights in Athens is PLENTY. If you could knock that down to an evening and a full day, do it.

We get in around 2 AM on the first night so its really 2 days but have to pay for 3 nights. I think we are gonna do Oia for sure.

Sweet- sounds like you guys will have a similar plan to ours.

We will be back right before you leave, I'll try to report back as much as I can upon returning home.

We booked with Kallisti Tours through Get Your Guide for the half day catamaran and driving tour.
