Another Italy question - drive or train

Flying into Milan, Como two nights to settle in, then Tuscany, Rome, return from Rome.
We're staying in a villa 45 minutes outside Florence and day tripping around Tuscany.
Train it to Florence and rent a car for Tuscany area only or rental in Milan and drive the entire route down to Tuscany and on to Rome. Around 4 hour drive looks like between each area.

We took a train from Milan to Lake Como and back. Easy.

I’m renting a car for our trip in July just because the villa we rented in Tuscany is remote. Otherwise I’d be on the train.
Also I’m my past experience, I have found Italo (Private) to be much better than Trenitalia (Gov’t owned)

If you want to experience Tuscany, you will need a car. Other than that, you could use the train easily enough.

We did train from Milan to Lake Como and then to Cinque Terre. Didn’t need or want a car in either.
Rented a car when leaving CT. Drove to Tuscany. Not sure how we’d have gotten around Tuscany without a car. Drove to Sorrento. Definitely needed a car in Sorrento but that’s because we stayed up on the mountain. I don’t think you would have to have one if staying in city. Drove to Rome airport to fly home and return car.

Rent in Florence for your days in Tuscany. Therre's no train once you get in the countryside.

Thanks... think we'll amend the rental to pick up near train station in florence. train it the other parts of the trip.

Just be aware driving in Florence. There are streets that you can sometimes go down and other times you're forbidden and will get ticketed. The Tuscan countryside is easy to drive. Know that you can be sharing the road with cyclists.
