quote:

I was talking to Kevin Steele last night about this, the defensive coordinator from Auburn, and I said ‘you went 3-1-7 on him’ three down lineman, a middle linebacker, and seven defensive backs. And he said the reason I did that is because if you sit there and you let Joe Burrow know that ‘Ok, No 27 is our strong safety, he’s going to be over here, No. 18 is our free safety, he’s over here, our corners are out here. If he knows the personnel and he knows where people are, you’re dead. There’s nothing you can call, and so you constantly have movement,’

quote:

He said it was the only time he can remember in a game where he’s going back while the offense has the ball saying ‘Ok, last time on 2nd and 10 we did this, gave him this look, and so we’re not going to do that.’ Because he said if you get into any kind of pattern that Brady, Ensminger, and Burrow get onto you -- that’s why it always looks like they have answers, that’s why it always looks like they’re always one step ahead because they figure out that ‘Ok, this is what they’re going to do after about the first or second series, and once they dial it in -- you better hold onto your hat because if you bring pressure, they’re going to beat you. If you sit back, they’re going to beat you.

So basically, as we've all seen, opposing defenses are fricked.

You can get away with some 3-1 when you have future all-pro first round draft picks up front pressuring Burrow, but if you don’t and the coverage breaks down you’re dead too.

Clemson is good but doesn’t have the personnel Auburn does, they did last year.

Steele didn’t slow us down. We bogged down twice on the doorstep and missed a FG. Left 17 points on the table

Pretty much moved the ball at will and stalled in the red zone.

Also, disguise the blitzer, the spy and crowd the LoS w/DBs, switch positions constantly...
If I'm clemson, I keep Simmons in safety as the over more than not...you want him defending passes and the run, not getting outwitted or outran by JB like Murray was in the OU game

I heard a talking head interviewed on Yahoo Sports this morning who said, "The only way to slow down this LSU offense is to stop CEH." First of all, how do you stop CEH? Stop the run? Then he takes a short pass for 50 yards. Put a linebacker on him? Ohhhk. All the while, Joe is beating your arse up and down the field. I love it when people pretend like they've watched this team all year and KNOW how to stop them. It's cute.

We bogged down because Steele slowed us down lol.

I don’t think Clemson has the personnel, but taking away from Steele’s good game plan is asinine.

those stalls are part auburn's D and part misfires on the offense. we know why we were a little sluggish - soggy field, not firing on all cylinders, and a few mistakes.

we won't have a soggy field vs Clemson, we are firing on all cylinders, and we are not mistake prone. it will take mistakes, especially the unforced variety, to give Clemson a chance.

Did he ask Steele how he slowed down the golden gophers?

Thus is why OSU lost in the semifinal.

I feel good about this LSU team, but

Does this guy know we won our last playoff game by 5 touchdowns (wasn’t really that close) with CEH barely seeing the field?

So in summary, have future first round draft picks that can get pressure rushing 3, be able to stop Clyde whether it's a run or pass to him, and constantly change the look because if Burrow, Ensminger and Brady identify your plan they'll gash you...and even then it led to a loss.

I’m not averse to giving Steele credit but really while the offense was clicking at that time it was not the beast it is today, plus Auburn had unique personnel on the DL that had been unmatched by other teams, including Clemson.

All the other teams that have tried to copycat Auburn’s approach since Auburn have gotten absolutely torched. Like Steele himself said, you can’t show him the same look twice, the 3-7-1 is over, dead. We can only hope Clemson tries to go back to that well.

Last year’s Clemson DL may have given us some fits, we are fortunate they’ve moved on to the NFL. Our offense should have a banner day and the question isn’t whether Clemson D can stop it but whether Clemson O can keep up.

While this seems obviously true at first take, it also seems that we got very conservative in the red zone for whatever reason.
