Let's talk Dave Aranda for a minute.

Defense still wins championships. Dave Aranda is the hottest name amongst defensive coordinators at the moment. I can guarantee you one thing; he will be a coach at a major university soon, very soon. The question is, will LSU miss the boat on our opportunity with him because we're muddling through whatever hire we're waiting to pan out if we miss out on Herman? Or let's say Coach O is hired, are you confident he will find a good DC replacement?
Top 10 defenses year in and year out, able to get it done at the SEC level, players and recruits rave about him, he's an x's and o's type coach, operates under sound football principles rather than emotion, confidence in knowing our defense will be locked up. Remind you of anyone?
Should we be more heavily considering him as the head coach? I know he doesn't have the experience as a HC at a major university, but why can't we be the school that gets him at a great value and then works on retaining him if he's successful??

I think he is the associate HC for a reason. Coach O and staff will be retained next season, and coach O will coach for his job again next year. If he doesnt have a very good year, Aranda takes over. JMO TIFWIW

Aranda has zero head coaching experience at any level. Coordinator and head coach are completely different jobs requiring completely different skill sets.
Aranda may make a good HC one day, but we don't know. Like O, he needs to go get a HC job at a lower school, kick arse, and then the big jobs will come calling.
Too much risk for a school like LSU to hire a coordinator with zero HC experience.

Herman has shown he can recruit (Ed Oliver). Aranda has not shown that yet. Therefore Herman > Aranda for HC right now. Being able to kill it on the recruiting trail is number 1 priority.
Had Aranda been able to pull Moses (his position group) despite Les leaving, you may have a point.

I can promise you he will be a finalist for the job. One of the conditions of O getting the interim gig was naming him Associate Head Coach.
And please dont compare him to Kirby Smart, apples and oranges.

Well he was able to recruit players that were currently on the roster, something LSU struggled at on defense for the past 5 years.
I will say this, you don't get guys that can go into these Louisiana kids homes, I can assure you schools like UT, TAMU, Bama, Auburn will. You can say what you want about Les, but he and his staff have been able to recruit. And fend off top programs from around the country.

I had made that assumption as well...But I watched him in the spring game in-person, and as much as possible at games and on tv, and he does not look like a man interested in being a lead man. He is by himself a lot on the sidelines, and seems like a guy who only leads when something passionate and/or cerebral is involved. He is layed back and seems like a bit of a loner.....I am wondering if he is not more interested in a DC career only, perhaps only moving up to the NFL, as opposed to a HC in college change.
I could be wrong, but that is my (surprising) observation on him.

If he is all that, and I believe he is, he's our secret to whipping Alabama's arse. Confuse and frustrate a freshman qb. I hope we can keep him next year.

why?
Well for one, Kirby had Daddy Saban involved in the defense. He has never coached a defense without arguably the greatest defensive coach in college football history overseeing everything.
Secondly, Kirby was not an awesome DC at 3 different schools using 3 different systems. Aranda has proven that it doesn't matter what school he is at or what players he has, he will field a great defense.
Now, I agree about the recruiting aspect. We have seen good things, but not enough to know he'd be an elite recruiting head coach.
However, I would take him 10/10 times over Orgeron. People wanting to hire Orgeron as full time head coach are out of their fricking minds. If he was from New Jersey nobody would want to hire him.

Bingo. It's why I get so tired of the "should Aranda be 'coach in waiting'" posts. The top coordinators do not always make good head coaches, especially defensive coordinators. No, OP. Aranda will not be considered for the job because it's too big a gamble--we're watching that play out at Georgia right now. If someone else hires him away, fine. We'll just buy our time until Smart is fired and then snatch him up immediately.

Derek Mason, Charlie Strong...there will be some top guys available in the near future. It doesn't begin and end with Aranda.

When Moses sees what Aranda is able to do with Divinity and Devin White he'll wish he chose LSU.

It's already known that Aranda does want to be a HC eventually, he's on the path to it. But he knows it's not time yet.

Exactly! I for one would be ecstatic about the Aranda hire. Defensive brilliance and a humble attitude, sign me up.
