In Petite and Maravich you've got all the scoring you need. The rest of the guys need to be role players. I'd put Derrick Taylor at the point and Shaq at center, then choose among a few guys for a small forward who play defense and is well rounded. Shaq wouldn't touch the ball on offense except to flush rebounds, and I'd put a shot limit on CJ - after his 20th shot he's done for the game. The offense would flow through Petite in the high post.
Edit: if CJ was on the team, that is. And it's no certainty. He never played team ball.

G Pistol Pete/CJ
F Macklin/Pettit. Pettit was a center, but I think he's mobile enough to play the 4

If your playing a real game or picking an all time team you got to have Ethan Martin at point! I loved Derrick Taylor but he was no where near the all around point Ethan was. Ethan has him on ballhandling running the offense, defense and forcing turnovers. Derrick was a better shooter a great shooter from top of the key but Ethan has him everywhere else. As far as CJ if you got Pete you don't need CJ monopolizing the ball. Not to mention Ethan gave you tons on D and CJ gives you nothing. You only got one ball so let Ethan bring it up and get it to the scorers where they need it which he was excellent at.
I go with Ethan and Pete in the backcourt with Rudy, Petit and Shaq in the frontcourt. Throw in Supersub Willie Sims, Anthony Wilson and Howard Carter for scoring off the bench. Add Big John Williams, Stromile Swift and Dewayne "the" Scales at the forwards and "The Cookieman" Cook as backup center and enforcer and you have a 12 man team that would beat the all time UCLA and North Carolina teams!

That said, what did his teams do again? CJ made the NCAAT twice (in 2 years).
Also CJ shot 47.4% FG career at LSU. Pete shot 43.8% career. CJ also shot better than Pistol at FT line, 86.3 vs. 77.5. Of course, can't compare 3s, but overall FG% encompasses.

Bob Petit was the best power forward in the NBA for a 10 year period.
I think he could have easily played the 4 at LSU.

One name that's left off this list too often is Stanley Roberts. He's probably the second best center ever to put on an LSU uniform- behind only Shaq.
I agree with the other names thrown out- Pistol, CJ, Petit, Shaq, Rudy, Martin, Taylor. Here's a few other all-timers: Sparky Wade, Kenny Higgs, Swift, Bass, Big Baby, John Williams.
Wasn't Joe Dean pretty good here? And Eddie Palubinskis? Throw in Tree Green, Dwayne Scales, Willie Simms, and Howard Carter.

What's this Derrick Taylor crap? What did he ever do to be mentioned in the same breathe as some of our all Americans ?

Derrick was a very good point guard and hit some big shots but was not nearly as good a passer defender, distributor or defensive point guard Ethan was. CJ was a smaller Pistol you wouldn't want to have both of them on the floor since there is only one basketball. CJ did shoot a higher percentage but a big part of that was Pete had to score 40 a game for LSU to have a chance to win. CJ had Blanton his freshman year who was a good scorer much better scorer than anyone Pete had on the floor with him. CJs soph year he had Shaq, Stanley, Vernell and Wayne Sims to help. Put Pete out there with Shaq and Petit and Macklin setting screens and going to the boards and take the pressure of taking the ball upcourt every possesion with Ethan bringing it up and Pete is unstoppable.
Also if I had to pick an LSU player to win the National Championship on a last second shot short of a Shaquille dunk I would take Howard Carter in the left corner all day. He was automatic. See the last seconds of the 1981 Georgia game as an example. Hi-C was money in the clutch
