Get rid of Matt House - still early

You can’t fire mid season and expect any improvement. He may need to be replaced, but they aren’t going to replace him before the season finishes. They are short handed on D staff as it is.

I wouldn’t be upset if they let House go at this point, but it’s nowhere near as easy as simply “finding” an interim.

If you go get someone off the street, they are likely to have different scheme, terminology, etc. than House. That might be a good thing long term. But A) you probably aren’t finding a long term coach that is available as an interim and B) it’s really tough to make that type of adjustment in the middle of a season.

The reality is that if House were fired, you would probably be looking at an internal promotion to interim DC. That way you have some semblance of continuity. But do you see an internal candidate that makes sense? Because I don’t.

Then there’s the recruiting aspect. If you fire House and bring in an interim, the entire defensive staff become dead men walking. You’re asking kids to commit not only to an unknown DC, but also unknown position coaches. If you wait until you’re ready to hire a permanent DC, you minimize that limbo period. The new DC takes over, decides who to keep/let go, and immediately starts calling on recruits/commits.

Recruits can obviously still infer that House might be fired, but it’s the lesser of two evils.

To me there has to be a compelling upside to firing a coach halfway through the season - either a chance for meaningful improvement this year or some longer term advantage (if, for example, or allows you to make your permanent hire sooner). I’m not seeing either of those upsides right now.
