Former LSU right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes has received the largest contract bonus ever for an MLB draft pick, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN reported on Tuesday.

Skenes will receive a bonus of $9.2 million after signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who selected the pitcher with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft earlier this month.

Arizona State product Spencer Torkelson received the previous highest bonus at $8.42 million from the Detroit Tigers in 2020.

Slot value keeps going up and up, so this isn't too much of a surprise. But, as always:

Still 500k under slot value, but that's a lot of money. Dude deserves it and will be a stud day 1 as we all know it. Curious how quickly he goes to the majors and how much rest they'll give him.

It wouldn't have surprised anyone if they did. But once the decision was made to draft Skenes, I think we all knew (including the Pirates' bean counters) the bonus was going to be huge.

I think he could pitch now. But IMO, the Pirates will give him some rest then a few appearances at Low-A at the end of the season. Next year, he'll get a couple of starts each at High-A, AA, and AAA and be in the Pirates rotation by or right after the All-Star break.

Rest? He doesn't need any rest. His innings were managed masterfully this year. I'll put it in perspective: In 89 when Ben broke the strikeout record, if you add up his innings for LSU and the innings he pitched for the Olympic team, it is more than Skenes has pitched in his entire collegiate career.

They are. They're paying less than $10MM for 3 years of cost control on a player that would get significantly more than that on the Free Agent market. ETA: 6 years of control overall but those arbitration years will even things out somewhat.

If you thought they would take the HS kid to save money on the draft overall you are willfully ignorant. The reason they would have taken him was laid out several times here and on podcasts and in newspaper articles. If you missed it, it's because you didn't want to know the truth.

You can actually thank Langford and Rangers with the deal he signed helped both Crews and Skenes

What’s your proof?
Henry Davis in 21?

Based off of them paying Termarr Johnson 7.2M in 2022 & now paying Skenes 9.2M maybe we should start saying they used to be notoriously cheap

I'm not looking for them to try and build a team around him, if they are like they usually are they have shot their wad

Anyone who truly believed that that front office was gonna pass on Skenes for a high school kid is delusional. Yeah sure the Pirates are cheap but Skenes is a player that if you pass on could be career suicide for some folks. It didn’t take any knowledge of being an MLB scout to watch the college World Series and realize he was the easiest decision an MLB team would ever have to make at pick #1. Had they not made the college World Series then maybe he could have been passed on but that’s a huge maybe but once the world saw that no GM was gonna pass on that type of player and make themselves look like a complete idiot if for pride and dignity alone at the very least. The Pirate
fans would have lost their minds.

This isn't 1989.

He pitched more innings than anyone in college baseball this year. Pittsburgh is in last place in their division. If they think Skenes is a guy who is close to ready to pitch now there is no pressing reason to bring him up to the big leagues this year. Give him rest and bring him to spring training next year. He'll likely start in the minors, but probably get called up in a few months.

He hasn’t pitched in a game in close to a month. He’s going to have to ramp things back up. They are going to take it very slow.
