That’s a hell of a record and career. Coaching a HOF QB in Bradshaw makes it even more impressive.

Bradshaw’s team lost to Sulpher in state final - he only started one year at Woodlawn. Curiously, did not even make All City team that year - was beat out by a QB at Fair Park. I think his name was Jack Miller who went on to Vandy. Joe Ferguson was QB when they won title in I think 1968 but Hedges had moved over to Captain Shreve by then and A L Williams, who was QB coach for Hedges, was the Woodlawn head coach. Hedges did win a state title at Shreve later. I was at Woodlawn from ‘63-65 and saw several of these guys play.
Williams had a string of excellent QB’s at Woodlawn both under Hedges and as head coach. He layer had a rather unsuccessful stint as head coach at La Tech later on I believe

A L Williams, might just be the nicest most humble man I've ever met.

Was coaching at Shreve during my years there. Good man and very well respected. I had no idea that he was still alive.

Has a future NFL QB under center, who held the National High School javelin record, and can only score 9 points.

Obviously, he was a great tennis coach. Are there any tennis courts named after him?

I’ve heard many people, including Terry Bradshaw, say that the best QB to come out of Woodlawn was Trey Prather.
His story is a sad one.
Anyway, RIP Coach Hedges…you had a positive influence on many young lives.

That’s true about Prather. I played at Shreve his last two seasons as Head Coach (Lee Hedges). He was one of the nicest gentlemen you could ever meet. They don’t make em like him anymore.

Prather was in my class. He was one of the string of successful QB’s at Woodlawn during that era. But Ferguson was the best high school QB I ever saw in that period. That was well before the spread evolved but he would have been great in that style offense as well.
Friend of mine played at Shreve under Hedges against Ferguson and said they thought they had a good game plan for him in that game. Said he carved them up like a Christmas turkey.

My son and I met him before the La Tech-Miami game years ago - maybe around 2003 or so. Super nice - asked him if Tech had any chance to win that game. Convincing “no” was the answer

Was he the QB who went to LSU but was drafted into the Vietnam War where he suffered an amputaiton(s).

Prather died from his injuries in ‘Nam - mine explosion I think. Went to LSU under Cholly Mac but he got disgruntled with McClendon’s style of offense so quit and joined Marines. He is on the Vietnam Wall in DC

Ferguson was the only player that I ever heard winning all-state by acclimation.

My high school coach.

Funny, I thought he was an old man when I played for him. But he was like 50.

He had a sub-.500 record at Northwestern. IDK what Tech saw in that to convince them he was a good hire, but they must have seen something. He went 4-7 his first year at Tech but He did well his next three years including a berth in the NCAA title game. I don't recollect why he left Tech, whether it was his idea or the school's.
