This is why the SEC needs to start their own network. Then it isn't totally about the ratings, but about the number of households you can get your network whether anybody watches it or not.

I'm shocked -- SHOCKED!! -- a TV exec would give a lowball number on a contract he will likely have to negotiate in the future. Gee, maybe it's a self-serving opinion? Naaaaaah.

5 straight BCS championships by four different teams is all you need to know about the value of this league.

Adding teams is just an excuse to renegotiate a deal that is now below market value.

Darren Rovell says TV execs tell him that A&M to the SEC adds only about 3% to the TV deal the league has.

would that be the same TV execs that would have to negotiate a new deal with the SEC? Cause that would be reason to assume the 3% is a lowball #

While Pilson said it's hard to argue that A&M's addition would dilute the conference, he says the Aggies have "minimal impact." "There are smart people at both ESPN (longhorn network?) and CBS and I would anticipate that they foresaw this type of contingency," Pilson said. "Based on their record over a period of time, (That is TOTAL bullshite!!! Notre Dame?) it doesn't appear like Texas A&M is going to be in the top tier of teams in the SEC. So if there's any adjustment to the TV deals, I would anticipate that it would be a very modest adjustment, if anything."

This guy is getting paid by CBS "as a consultant" to make these statements. I am certain the SEC presidents would be hesitant to make a move to add A&M if they stood to lose money, or make a minimal gain.

Proof is in the pudding. I rest and close.

Verrrry interesting, around the interwebbies, the number of posts by t-sipping nutless bovines seeking to make A&M look bad ...

... that are so eeeeeeeasily exposed by the readers of such posts for the total, absolute, nonsensical propoganda that they are.

AMERICA IS ONTO YOU AND YOUR GAMES, BEVO! Rue the consequences of having proved yourselves to be THE team (other than perhaps Baylor) that NO CONFERENCE IN AMERICA wants to have as a part of it.

My question is that doesn't it take 2 to tango? Why in the hell would the networks decide to tear up their deal at this point instead of working in the framework of the current deal that provides built in escalators?

The SEC signed a very long term contract. Just because the SEC adds a team does not mean that the SEC is no longer required to honor their contractual agreement. Most likely the networks throw them a bone, but a full scale rework is out. That is just bad business and sets a precedent for other conferences.

The B1G did not get a rework, just an added revenue bump because they sold their rights to the title game. The Pac-12's contract was up. The Big 12 (while they are still around) renegotiated a deal just before their contract ran out and essentially extended their deal. The SEC recently signed a very long term deal and now are paying the price of doing so.

Is there any reason, back with even some shred of proof, that the networks would be willing to rework the deal. Slive has stated he would like to and there are clauses in the contract, but in no way shape or form has anyone from the network side has even hinted at this happening. There were rumors out of Fox a soon as the B1G expanded, same for the PAc-12. Nothing in regards to the SEC.

People need to think of this less as a fan and more as a business decision. There is a reason why there was some concerns about the unprecedented length of the SEC deal.

Which has been one reason why I don't understand the rush to expansion. Any school that we bring in has to add at least $18.3m in value to the league (to use 2010-2011 numbers), just for the SEC to break even, and I think that there are very few universities that can add that much value by themselves. In order to be worth expansion the team has to bring in significantly more value than the break-even amount.

Well put. A lot of people want to the SEC adding teams like WVU and they don't seem to understand that will mean splitting the pie into more pieces.

And that is not counting costs like increased travel expenses for non-revenue sports, or costs/preferences such as tradition and history.

Expansion into Texas isn't all about tv sets. It's giving Texas youth ownership into the SEC as a member, as a fan, recruit, or out-of-state student.

It's planting an SEC flag into Hou, Dal, SA, Aust, etc..

It's further establishing all big Texas markets as SEC Country for alumni bases, and their sporting interests for the coming decade$.

It's opening the Tejas recruiting grounds to all SEC schools(not just primarily Ark, LSU, and Bama), as fully accepted members..and not just distant interlopers.

It's a bad thing for UT-Austin! OU too.
