To me they have to be a serious contender with the possibility of being a future powerhouse in football and don't know but figure they will probably have decent baseball at some point as well

1. Commuter school
2. Very small fan base with few loyal followers and no national interest
3. Zero tradition
4. Play in an NFL stadium with no on campus stadium
5. Culturally nearly opposite your average SEC school
6. Suck arse in most other sports, including basketball

Seriously people, do you guys even think about these schools before you start throwing them in the SEC just to find a #16? USF will never, ever be in the discussion at all.

A lot of hating on USF here, so let me clear a few things up. I've spent time at both LSU and USF. USF has been playing football for only a short time. Not much time to develop a fan base; however, 52,000 showed up to watch USF hang 70 points on FAMU. That's greater than MSU, OM, Kentucky, and Vandy. USF's student body is 45,000+ and the school is considered a commuter school. USF gained this reputation as a large amount of students live off campus but this is a bit misleading. 10,000 live on campus and probably just as many live in any of the condos, town homes, and apartments within walking distance of the school. Not a whole lot different than Baton Rouge.

not hating

what does USF provide that helps the future of this conference? Can USF right now make the SEC an extra 45 million per year, as that is the minimum baseline that it will take for any team to be worth accepting for exisitng members. I dont believe they do and they do nothing as far as adding to the footprint for the future SEC network which will provide the lion share of income in the future.

The USF/UCF combo is actually a nice get for any school looking for a presence in Florida......which is meaningless for the SEC or ACC. When there was talk of salvaging the Big 12, which Texas may still need to look at to keep the LHN as is, those 2 schools would be a solid move.

USF stands to get a lot more from the SEC than the Conference gets from USF initially. I understand that.. Like any other investment you have to look at it long term. USF is on the rise both athletically and academically. Adding USF gets the SEC some additional penetration in the most populated State in the Southeast. The greatest amount of athletic talent in Florida is coming out of Tampa. The SEC could do worse...

well i feel the same way but we dont need exposure in florida and the current SEC members would get less money per year adding USF. Ill pass.

Make an extra 45 MILLION for the SEC??? You're out of your mind. Zero schools in the country make that in athletic profits. Many do in revenues, But there's only two schools in the country that make more than 10 million per year in profit - UGA and Michigan.

45 million a year to the SEC would mean like an extra 3 million a year in profits to each team. That's not going to happen. The LongHorn network which has been one of the biggest reasons the Big 12 is falling apart only makes 15 million a year and it's for the biggest athletic program in the country. Adding Texas USC and Ohio State probably wouldn't get us an extra 45 million; it's delusional to set such a standard.

Is it really a bad thing that USF plays in a pro stadium?

USF would be a definite candidate for the 15 or 16th spot i think, but not 14. i am all but certain thats going to wvu at this point.

Agreed. I was sort of kidding when I posted a thread about USF a week or two ago, but if we're going to 16 teams they become much more of a real option IMO. I could def see the ACC going after them

And let's also not forget how relatively new to big-time football FSU used to be when it emerged from the pack and became a major player in the NCAA/BCS world. USF is sort of following that same pattern...

Well, let's revisit this in 2040. But until then...no

They play in a stadium far from campus and struggle to get people to go to their games on a consistent basis. IMO, they are not well enough established to get a spot in the SEC, a lot of their own students are fans first of one of the Big 3. Plus, Tampa Bay is a HUGE pro-Gator area. At least with FSU you would get the panhandle.
