If the Big 12 folds, there is a chance the ACC folds (due to SEC poaching)...perhaps the ACC leftovers can team up with Kansas and Mizzou to make a formidable hoops conference...
I think the ACC would then poach from the Big East (along with the Big 10/16), which would end up folding. Then you'd be left with five 16-team power conferences:
SEC
Big 16
Pac 16
ACC
and the MWC (new name would be appropriate)
The new MWC would become a 16-team league by adding the leftover Big 12 schools and schools like UH, TCU, Rice and Boise State.

why wouldnt the remnants of the Big 12 go after the Memphis/Houston/TCU/Rice schools and have a smaller conference?

Texas money >>> KU money
but even almighty Texas is going to feel a small measure of financial pain when they have to fly their women's softball team to Washington State. Especially when they land in Idaho and bus two hours to get there
KSU repeatedly paying to fly their women's softball team to the East Coast would hurt a LOT

Actually, I'm kind of wondering why Kansas, K-State, Baylor and Mizzou don't stay in the Big-12... Then all the other schools have to make a payment to leave, they can invite a bunch of new members in (who might like the name recognition of the Big-12), and they can even use all the old stationary.

Right, they could cherry pick the best mid-majors like TCU, Boise, BYU, Utah, etc.
Not a good option, but it's one route that schools like Kansas and Mizzou can take.

great point
plus I have a hard time believing that the Big 12 office will just roll over and cease to exist

Right now Kansas is praying that A&M doesn't want to go to the Pac-10 and that the Pac-10 will pick them up instead. It sounds like if A&M bails for the SEC, the Pac-10 is going to go after either Kansas or Utah.

what i think kansas should do is just play football and all the other sports in the MWC but be independent in bball.
what i think you should do is learn something, anything at all about college basketball

The big problem is that the realignment is exclusively based on football, but it really is a pain in the neck for every other team involved, whether it's the non-revenue sports (increased travel time for everything) or the basketball powers.

And it is the Big-12 conference that has the automatic BCS bid. That's a nice source of revenue.

exactly
even Texas would feel the pain of operating all of their women's and minor sports in the red

kansas basketball =/= memphis basketball
memphis has never been what kansas is in basketball and probably never will be, partly bc they are in a shite conference.

In the short run at least, they will benefit from the lucrative TV deal. I assume part of the reason why the colleges are moving is because they are seeking more cash from TV deals. They will get that from the cash grab for these 16 team Super Conferences, and part of that will pay for women's rowing and men's wrestling.
It will still be a pain for those kids to travel 9 hours for a track meet or whatever, and they will miss more class time because of it.
I know that we are pretty much pretending that college basketball and football players are "student-athletes" in at least half of the cases, but it's not the same for the non-revenue sports.
