The BCS system started in 1998 and has determined our national champion since then. CFB has not changed much since then. 1998 sounds good to me.

I generally consider the modern era to be 1983. Miami beating Nebraska in the Orange Bowl changed college football.

Polls started awarding a NC in the 30's, integration started in the 60's, and the SEC divided into divisions and held the first conference championship game in the 90's.
