The BCS system started in 1998 and has determined our national champion since then. CFB has not changed much since then. 1998 sounds good to me.

I generally consider the modern era to be 1983. Miami beating Nebraska in the Orange Bowl changed college football.

What makes 1976 "modern" ?

Polls started awarding a NC in the 30's, integration started in the 60's, and the SEC divided into divisions and held the first conference championship game in the 90's.

What's so special about 76?

Yes. If you click on a team name it will give you yearly records with notes about NCAA sanctions for games forfieted or vacated.
