I decided that if I could "play God", I would completely re-vamp the system. My idea is 8 conferences, 12 teams each (scheduling for FB and BB the same as the SEC), and an 8 team playoff between the conference champs. The FBS schools that don't make the cut of 96 would be sent down to the FCS.
My goal was to keep down the travel distances for division games. Ignoring Hawaii, there are only a handful over 500 miles (Miami and UTEP are the main culprits). The playoff rounds would take place on the 3rd weekend in Dec, the weekend before/during New Years, and the weekend after New Years. The games would be at regional neutral sites selected like the basketball tournament does. Teams that don't make the playoff would play in bowl games.
Big East "Coastal" - Army, Boston College, Connecticut, Rutgers, Temple, Syracuse
Big East "Appalachian" - Marshall, Maryland, Navy, Penn St, Pittsburgh, West Virginia
CG - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
Big 10 "Great Lakes" - Akron, Bowling Green, Michigan, Michigan St, Ohio St, Toledo
Big 10 "Ohio Valley" - Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami U, Purdue
(the OH/MI MAC schools are interchangeable)
CG - Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis
Big 12 "Great Lakes" - Illinois, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Wisconsin
Big 12 "Plains" - Iowa, Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, Missouri, Nebraska
CG - Edward Jones Dome, St Louis
ACC "North" - Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina St, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
ACC "South" - Central Florida, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, South Florida
CG - Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte
MWC "Cascades" - Boise St, Idaho, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, Washington St
MWC "Rockies" - Air Force, BYU, Colorado, Colorado St, Utah, Utah St
CG - Sports Authority Field, Denver
Pac-12 "North" - Cal, Fresno St, Nevada, San Jose St, Stanford, UNLV
Pac-12 "South" - Arizona, Arizona St, Hawaii, San Diego St, UCLA, USC
CG - Univ of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale
SEC "East" - Auburn, Florida, Florida St, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
SEC "West" - Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Miss St, Ole Miss, Memphis
CG - Georgia Dome, Atlanta
SWC "North" - North Texas (or Tulsa), Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, SMU, TCU, Texas Tech
SWC "South" - Baylor, Houston, Rice, Texas, Texas A&M, UTEP
CG - Cowboys Stadium, Arlington
Let me know if I missed any teams. I almost forgot Rutgers.

If you could start over and create the SEC in your own image, what would it look like? What schools would you have as members and why.
10 schools round robin.

Take away Vandy and MSU. Add aTm, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and FSU.
