If you could start over and create the SEC in your own image, what would it look like? What schools would you have as members and why.

I prefer regional aligned conference roosters generating great rivalries in cfb.
Al - UA, Aub
Ark - UA
Fl - UF, FSU
Ga - UG, GTech
La - LSU
Ms - UM, MSU
NC - UNC, NCS
Tn - UT
SC - USC, CU
Va - VT

If go more then 16, I would consider A&M only if Aggie jokes were allowed on TD.

West division:
LSU
A&M
Mizzou
Arkansas

Central division:
Ole Miss
Miss. St
Alabama
Auburn

South division:
Florida
Georgia
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

North division:
UNC
Va Tech
USCe
Kentucky

Balanced divisions (don't split up the largest rivalries and keep one out-of-division rivalry intact yearly for each team), maybe switching Tennessee for Kentucky because that is the division with the most history. It also accomplishes everything the money men want: more markets, more teams that have respectable, profitable athletic programs, all within the region, all in new states, and they don't create a conference that is literally impossible to escape without two losses like adding FSU, Oklahoma, Texas, w/e might.

The other thing that makes it work neatly is that the oldest traditional cross-divisional rivalries are between the Central and the South - so you have the potential to either pair those two divisions up one one side of a four-team divisional champion bracket late in the season, adding the excitement that a playoff elimination game from a traditional rivalry would bring to the table, or you can just make an elaborate series of tiebreakers that function to eliminate the champion of one of those divisions if the divisional champions have identical win-loss, and do something similar with the new teams, creating new cross-divisional yearly matchups which could be lots of fun.

I'm kind of surprised that most of y'all wouldn't make many changes. I think if I had my choices I would go with:

East
Florida
Georgia
Clemson
North Carolina
Va Tech
Tennessee

West
Alabama
Auburn
Ole Miss
LSU
Texas A&M
Arkansas

I see no need in having Vandy in the league they just don't seem to fit overall, although Nashville is nice. I also don't think that Mississippi only needs 1 school in it. I like the idea of having all of the major media markets and having some great tradition mixed in as well.

We are pretty close to ideal the way we are. I think 12 is a good number b/c I really like the SECCG, but we are still small enough there is pretty good cohesion in the conference and every team plays every other team fairly regularly.

IMO Kentucky doesn't really fit in b/c it is more a basketball school and is too far North. I'd swap them for Clemson.

The only other possible change would be maybe swapping Arkansas for FSU.

We would have the SECCG as usual. There would be an eight team playoff for the National Championship. Winners of SEC, B1G, Pac-12, Big-12 and ACC, with three wild cards. First round played at the home stadium of the higher ranked team. Semi-finals and championship game would rotate between the Rose, Sugar and Orange bowls.

SEC North:

Vandy, UK, UNC, VT, TN, USCe, UGA, Arky

SEC South:

A&M, LSU, OM, MSU, AL, AU, FSU, UF.

You play each of the 7 other teams in your division, one permanent team from the other division, and a 2 year cycle home and home with a team from the other division.

permanant opponents:

AU-UGA
AL-TN
FSU-VT
Arky-A&M
OM-Vandy
MSU-UK
UNC-LSU
UF-USCe

If I were the NCAA God, I would have 4 16 team AQ super conferences: PAC 12, Big 10+6, SEC, and ACC. Then one non-AQ conference: CUSA.

There would be no rankings as everything would be based on W/L records. until the end of the season, and each team would have at least one permanent opponent from another AQ conference.

The conference Champions from the PAC 16/Big 10+6 and SEC/ACC would play each other at the home stadium of the host school. odd years: SEC/Big10+6 hosts, even: ACC/Pac12 hosts.

The conference championships are held in the current championship week, then a bye week before the playoff.

The BCS games would retain the current structure.

The 4 playoff teams would end up playing 15 games total.

The losers of the two playoff games get a spot in one of the current BCS bowls to determine 3rd and 4th place. The Conference runner ups of the two NC game participant's conferences get a BCS bowl bid together. The 3rd BCS game is the runner ups to the other 2 conferences, and the 4th features an at-large AQ team and the CUSA champion. The non BCS bowls pick up the rest of the teams.

This way you get to keep the current bowl structure, while adding a playoff.
