I am guessing that if Texas was separated from OU and A&M, the Red River Shootout would survive and the A&M series would end...
IF the Legislature doesn't get involved then you're most likely right. But that's the big unknown; will the TX Legislature mandate the game be played like the FL Legislature did with Florida and FSU?

I can see this working quite well for all of us (give or take a GA Tech or Clemson in lieu of one or two of these refusing to join).
Of the three big schools (FSU, Clemson, GA Tech) being rumored, personally I would pick Tech. They have had moderate success in past years, plus they bring the added bonus of being one of the top-rated academic institutions in the USA.

Yeah. Their performance against Air Force in the Indy Bowl last year was stellar. (Sorry, couldn't help myself). I think FL St. or Va Tech would be the best way to go. This is the SEC, the best conference in college football, we should go after and get the best. I think schools like TAMU and others need to be crossing their fingers and praying for an SEC invite. The SEC presidents also need to get over the in-state issues and go for what's going to make the conference the strongest. Super conferences are coming whether we want them or not. The SEC needs to be laying the ground work now to make sure it's among the top when that day comes.

I agree VT is the best pick because I prefer expanded footprint whenever possible.
However, the question was who would be the best choice IF the only options left were schools in states where the SEC already has a member school. There were three options presented: FSU, GA Tech, and Clemson, which are the big three that have been mentioned repeatedly.
I keep hearing time and time again that FSU has NO interest in the SEC. It's apparently happy being the big dog in the small football yard that is the ACC. I agree it increases the football stature of the SEC (which is already king of the gridiron) but you still have to want to come.
This leaves Clemson and GA Tech; I think the schools are equal in terms of the big three sports but GA Tech gives any conference the added bonus of higher academic ratings (which may be the next big thing the NCAA pushes) and so that's why I picked them.

Comments today made by several Texas state congressmen, including the chairman of the Higher Education Committee, seem to suggest they would NOT mandate the game be played. Which surprises me a bit - but after all the rhetoric the politicians spewed when it became known that A&M was leaving, nothing has been done about it. Which is how it should be. I would like the two teams to play but not because of some law.
