The only year it was relevant, IIRC, was when Mizzou and Kansas were both undefeated going into the game back in 2007.
In 1960, Mizzou was ranked number one, but lost the Last game of the season to Kansas. The Beakers later had to forfeit for using an ineligible player. Didn't matter - it cost Mizzou the national championship.

KU and Mizzou hate each other, but it's much more of a hoops than football rivalry. KU has always sucked in football but both schools have pretty decent hoops programs. They can still play OOC. I really hope Mizzou gets into the SEC, and that KU eventually finds its way to the B1G somehow.

not sure I have ever watched a KU v Mizzou football game...could care less. Is/was that actually a rivalry game anyone knows about??
depends how informed you are - falls into the washington/wsu, oregon/oregon state, minn/wisconsin, indiana/purdue type thing
although the quality of the games between missouri and kansas in recent years has been better than a lot of those IMO
Kansas is the big rivalry MU should be upset to be losing - if they can continue to play each other out of conference that would be a good thing for everyone concerned IMO. Illinois to a much lesser extent - the games MU/Illinois have played in STL recently raise the profiles of both schools in the greater STL area especially

After losing six straight Illinois dropped Mizzou.

I'm not that concerned about rivalries, etc as those will all develop over time in the SEC for Mizzou. Adding the states of Missouri and Texas to the SEC is simply huge for media rights and SEC network negotations. This is all good stuff guys...just like running water and fiber optic cable. By the way, not sure I have ever watched a KU v Mizzou football game...could care less. Is/was that actually a rivalry game anyone knows about??
My friend, if you're going to attempt to infuse logic on this board, you're woefully outmatched.

I just don't want a third team in the SEC that has a Tiger mascot.
4 if Clemson ever joins.

Bit of an understatement there.
I am not much of a basketball fan at all, but walking around Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence is one of the cooler sports-related moments in my life. It's got all of the charm of an old college gym, but it's HUGE.
Instead of the normal "2002 Big 12 Champs" banner that any other school would hang they have a banner for "Big 8," and it's got all of the years they won the conference on that one banner. They had one banner for each conference they've been in (Big 6, 7, 8 and 12) one for their final fours, and one for their national titles. They don't even bother with a banner for NCAA tournament appearances. All of that history and only six banners. Now that is understated.
The other thing was the retired jerseys. Like I said, I am not much of a basketball, but seeing the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Danny Manning, etc was just unbelievably cool.
I know all of this realignment is being driven by football money, but I hope that KU has a spot in a nice conference once the Big 12 is done.

Does Auburn even count?
I think they're the Plainsmen now that we've got more Tigers in the conference and their War Eagle ran smack into a plate-glass window.

KU has always had a very midwestern feel. Kansas City is like a miniature Chicago (stockyards, etc.) and the B1G is a much better hoops conference than the Big-12 will ever be. I don't see why the B1G wouldn't want to add a Top-5 hoops program, AAU member with a decent TV market (KC) that is absolutely no threat to any of their existing football powers.

Come to UK, The only banners hanging are FInal Four or National CHampionship. There used to be a big sign outside that said SEC champs with damn near every year on it, but they took it down with the remodel.

For a long while I thought KU was just unlikely to merit an invite from the Big 1G because the wouldn't bring in enough revenue to justify splitting the pot further
Hearing that the KU basketball (tier 3 I think they call it) broadcast rights bring in over 9 million dollars a year has made me step back and reconsider whether that is true.
Now I am leaning towards thinking MU and Kansas would have made good sense if the Big 1G were ready to expand to 14 - I think they are just not ready to expand because they view Notre Dame and maybe Texas as the big potential gets they keep hoping for

Allen Fieldhouse is one of those places like Lambeu Field. There is a long, long waiting list to get season tickets, so there is a big audience for all of their games.
I work with a guy from Leavenworth, KS. His parents always visit when KU plays down here because they can't get tickets up there.

Neither city has had stockyards in decades.

Presser at 12 Noon just in time to rain on the parade of the Big UT-OU game?

There aren't any banners for SEC Tournament or SEC regular season championships in Rupp either. There's 14 banners for the 14 Final Fours, 7 of which are national championships. It's also 1.5 times the size of Allen Fieldhouse. UK's SEC trophies are in boxes in the basement of the Coliseum gathering dust and aren't even on display anywhere.
Kansas has a nice little program. They aren't Kentucky.

The rivalry is real, going back to border raids between the two states before and during the Civil War, but the football has generally sucked.
The only year it was relevant, IIRC, was when Mizzou and Kansas were both undefeated going into the game back in 2007.
I get the historical relevance thanks to the History Channel, but outside of Kansas or Missouri, does anyone care if this game goes away? This is not like the Texas/Texas A&M game being jeopardized.

I say bring on two of the following as well; Clemson, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Florida State! ;)

To me it is pretty much the same as Texas/A&M being jeopardized
I don't think many people without an association with the state of Texas care much about Texas vs A&M. I really only watched with interest when one of the teams losing mattered to LSU (esp given that is falls on rivalry week - when there are tons of games with similar passion)
