and people in southern Mizzou waged war on the Norther Mizzou yanks 140 years ago for these very same issues. funny.
Mizzou is one of the most interesting states to read about in the civil war. interesting fact, the confederate capital of Missouri re-located to Marshall, Texas in 1861.
yea i know, cool story bro.

This Confederacy talk is exactly the type of thing the original post is talking about. The rest of the country thinks "regressive redneck" when they hear it! Pining for the Old South is not what we need, but pride in the new one.

Abe Lincoln forced the "secession" from Virginia with northern sympathizers and his troops - primarily because he didn't want to lose the vital east/west B&O railroad - so here we are. BTW - Virginia never recognized the yankee imposed "government" of WV during the war - WV was still part of Virginia and "west" Virginians who fought for the south were part of the army of Virginia.
100% true and accurate. You sir..Know your history. BTW: I am beginning to warm up to WV and I am not as oppossed to them now.

Funny how it's ok to stereotype some people but not others. It just shows what hypocrites, liars and how full of hate these people are. Why would anyone even listen to them? If the South had won its freedom, the entire world would be different and better.

WVU fans would be best served to not bring anything up about it. Your whole existence as a state is based upon being pro Union. Not that it has any real bearing today, but just saying.
i posted this in another thread
WV becoming its own state was more about leaving the rich plantation owners from the tidewater and Richmond area who ran the sate. Most the people in counties that became WV were too poor to even own slaves so slavery wasn't the deciding factor or reason to create its own state, these mountain people thought they could govern themselves better. It was just as much as about state rights as when southern states left the union.
You wouldn't know the difference if you crossed the state line into wv from blacksburg va to warrenton va b/c they culturally are the same

Pick up a book and find out for yourself why the war was fought,
most books below the college level are wrong as hell about this. pick up book(s) containing actual original sources (like the soldiers actually fighting) and they tell you why they fought for their respective sides. quite interesting reads and where i first learned that the hi-school history books are mostly lies and PC spins. americans are quick to point out the propaganda of foreign enemies but we simply eat up our own propaganda and defend it as if it were the truth.

Sounds like Mizzou fans could be pretty useful in educating all the unreconstructed types around here.

Could we start a Civil War Geek board for these threads?

The North and South had differing economies. Over time that gap widened with new tariffs from the north being placed on import items, election of northern officials over southern etc. Effectively threating the "southern way of life".
To say slavery was the only cause of the Civil War is tunnel-visioned.

Nobody outside the South gives a shite. Arguing about Civil War motivations says "regressive redneck" to them.
... and if you're Missouri, aren't you a little justified in being concerned about hitching your cart to Old South schools and traditions?

Beyond all the obvious issues is the fact that Missouri doesn't need to jump in bed with the most regressive, redneck part of the country.
From reading all the replies on TD.com to this, I don't see anything wrong with this statement.
You idiots are still talking about the confederate south and how it would be better if the south had won.
Holy shite, some of you guys are some ignorant fricks.

Missouri split almost evenly north and south so it's about half "regressive redneck" and half douchebag. The state is stuck in an eternal identity crisis. Most likely of the sexual variety.

This "Lost Cause" Civil War crap is entertaining I must say.
Even with that said, anybody from Kansas City or St. Louis giving anybody from the south the business about being "racist" is a joke too. Both places are some of the most segregated and racist places in the USA.

A "book"? Why, for the revisionist history?
Why not use actual source material?
"A Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of the State of Mississippi from the Federal Union
In the momentous step, which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery - the greatest material interest of the world..."
