I keep hearing about the large television markets that the various conferences will get by expanding. It seems to me that if people don't attend the games, they probably won't watch them on television either. Below is a list of the 2010 average home game attendances for every SEC school and any other team that I have seen mentioned as an expansion candidate for any of the conferences. Based on the numbers, Texas A&M was a slam dunk compared to the other potential SEC candidates. You can also see why Boise St isn't attractive to the Big 12 or Big East. Besides their remote location, they also have a small average home attendance. The Big 12 also isn't gaining much by having TCU join as far as attendance goes.

Air Force 40,093
Alabama 101,821
Arkansas 68,932
Army 31,667
Auburn 86,087
Boise St. 33,269
BYU 61,381
Cincinnati 35,067
Clemson 77,469
Connecticut 38,248
East Carolina 49,665
Florida 90,511
Florida St. 71,270
Georgia 92,746
Georgia Tech 46,449
Houston 31,728
Kentucky 66,070
Louisville 50,648
LSU 92,718
Maryland 39,168
Memphis 23,918
Mississippi 55,898
Mississippi St. 54,999
Missouri 61,540
Navy 32,653
North Carolina 58,250
North Carolina St. 56,877
Notre Dame 80,795
Oklahoma 84,738
Oklahoma St. 50,812
Pittsburgh 52,165
Rutgers 46,195
San Diego St. 34,133
SMU 23,515

Divide by 10.......2,322 is way more accurate.

This must be tickets distributed not actual attendance.

I've always been disappointed in the attendance to Georgia Tech games. Attendance was pretty bad when I was there and judging from the televised games it still is. I can't think of a single school that is located in a city with a professional team that has good attendance. I live fairly close to Houston and even Texas can't sell out Reliant Stadium when they play Rice there.

It has more to do with the fact that UGA and Auburn both have more fans in ATL than does GT.

Sorry, but these numbers are stupidly inaccurate. Probably not your fault, but still.

Look at A&M actual attendance. We are averaging over 88,000 per game this year. Our capacity of 82,000 is easily exceeded.

ETA: We only had like 76,000 for SFA last year. Killed our average. Still good to average over 80,000 per game for 10 years while we sucked and we aren't in a major city

Yeah, the Texas AD buys the unsold tickets and reports a sell out every game. Go look at games last year. DKR was half empty and they were claiming 100K fans.

Again, Texas is all about PR and image

The only time Heinz field sells out is for the Steelers...unless the Pitt Panthers are playing Notre Dame or West Virginia University. I have a buddy in Pittsburgh who is trying to get rid of 3 tickets in the lower lever corner endzone for the game against Utah this weekend. Nobody wants to pay for them (and he cut the price in half of the ticket value). He will end up giving them away.

Of all the stats thrown out for expansion, home attendance is probably the most meaningless.

Conference expansion is about making more money for the overall conference and strengthening geographic and television markets. Attendance benefits only the home team, and the conference couldn't care less.

Example: East Carolina easily outdraws Miami in home attendance (although Miami was not on your list). Which one would the SEC rather have, if picking between the two?
