Why are LSU fans always bitching about having to play Florida?
Probably because they've been very good for the last 20 years and have won 3 national championships and 8 conference championships in that time. Tennessee has won one BCS title and 3 conference championships in that time and hasn't won one since 1998. Florida is 15-5 against Tennessee in that time span and won again this season.

Remember when we had two permanents? Auburn got screwed with both Florida and Georgia every year.
LSU had Florida and Kentucky. Alabama had Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
And LSU did miss the championship game in 2006 because it lost to Florida on the road to finish at 6-2. Arkansas got in at 7-1 because it played Tennessee, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. Their lone SEC loss was to LSU. Had we had Arkansas' east schedule, we probably go to Atlanta to play Florida with the winner playing for the national title.
Auburn finished at 6-2 that year as well, but they beat Florida at Jordan Hare.

I don't know what Cecil was smoking or drinking when he wrote this. He's too smart and too good of a writer for this.
He has Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, and Mississippi State playing three against the East, which means that those four teams will not all play each other. Since LSU, Ole Miss, and TAMU only play two against the East, then that leaves six games...one against every other West team. For example, Alabama would play 3 against the East, then one each against LSU, UM, and TAMU...that only leaves two games but three opponents...AU, MSU, and Ark.
So, for example, under Cecil's plan Alabama and Arkansas could go undefeated in the SEC...8-0...yet never play each other.
Who goes to Atlanta, Cecil?

It seems the only fair way would be for A&M to play 4 from each division until a 14th is added.

I'm not trying to figure it all out, but they would play each other.

Alabama's hypothetical home-away schedule would be (home) Auburn, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Georgia and (away) Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas and LSU. That's what it would have been in 2012 anyway, with the exception of substituting Texas A&M for Ole Miss

I was just giving one scenario. In the scenario you mentioned, Alabama doesn't play Ole Miss.
Under Cecil's scenario, it is impossible for Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, and Mississippi State to all play play each other. 3 games against the East means only 5 games against the West...but there are six West opponents.

I think he assumes the Mississippi schools wouldn't be a threat for Atlanta so he didn't have them playing all of the others that have a legitimate shot.
But your point is taken. Could you imagine if Alabama and LSU didn't battle this year and both were undefeated? Who goes to Atlanta?

It really is a huge reason why 13 teams is problematic. With six in one division and seven in another, if everyone plays the same number of conference games, in one division there would have to be some teams that don't play each other.

And here's another point...if you're the Ole Miss or MSU AD, do you really want, for example, home games against Alabama or LSU off your schedule? The biggest money makers of the year? I don't think so.

Most don't.....but the ones that do obviously think it's not fair that our permanent SEC East is the team that has won the SEC East 10 of the past 19 years. And they are right. It's not fair. Now, are you really that stupid that you had to have it explained to you?

I love it and don't want to lose it. It is a marquee game every year between two established powers boosting each teams SOS and always get national hype and exposure.

I'm going to laugh so hard when LSU fans get their wish, whenever it happens, and Florida is no longer their permanent rival and then UF goes through a down period and Tennessee or Georgia rise back up. Florida hasn't been good forever, all these things come in cycles. Alabama was down for a decade, LSU was down basically for 20 years in the 80s and 90s and both look prime to dominate the SEC for years to come.

In the mid 80's, Florida was the only team left that had won neither an SEC football or basketball championship.
Any SEC program is just one bad hire away from mediocrity...or worse.

Do you not see how having to play THREE TIMES as many opponents coming off of bye weeks as the next closest SEC team is UNFAIR??? If you can't, then there's no possible way an objective conversation can be had.
stop whining
Most LSU fans, me included love that we play Florida every year.

Down in the 80's? You might want to check your history. 6 bowl games including 2 Sugars and an Orange and 2 SEC Championships. '90-'94 were rough but LSU had 3 pretty good teams that won bowl games from '95 to '97.

Well considering Florida has been the most consistent power in the league besides LSU over the last 15+ years, it's no surprise that many LSU fans are not in favor of Florida being a permanent on the LSU schedule.
So what. It helped your strength of schedule when you beat them in '07 and lost to Kentucky. You don't look forward to playing them every year?
all said though, I wish they would do away with permanent teams though.

I love playing Florida every year. We never have to play them at freakin' 11:20! Let's face it, fans of every school bitch about something.
I do think that while UF won't always be dominant, the landscape of college football has changed in the last 10-15 years. It has become an arms race, and UF will always be better equipped for this than the other schools in the East. UT and UGA are close enough in this respect, so ultimately the better coaches will prevail.

I guarantee you Ole Miss don't think it's fair they have to play Vandy every year. I like LSU playing Florida every year. You can bet it will be a big game and will be played on national TV.
It's competitive, unlike poor Ole Miss getting a beat down by Vandy most years.

This is definitely the flaw in the system; otherwise his suggestions work quite well IMO. The two rules you have to abide by are keeping eight conference games for everyone and scheduling three cross-division games for each East team.
Instead of choosing four teams from the West seemingly at random, I think they should pick the teams that have East rivalries worth preserving. The obvious choices there are Bama-UT, Aub-UGA, and OM-Vandy. There is some flexibility on the fourth, but I would select MSU-UK to make it work out the way he did.
Each AL school would play one MS school and then switch the next year. The only gap would be if an AL school and a MS school who didn't play each other tie for the division title. Every other tie scenario is covered. After the rivalry games are taken out, everyone in the West would play two random cross-division games every year.
