Why is it such a crap shoot when hiring top coaches from lower levels or top assistants

Is it just all the extra duties that take their time? Is it the pressure and stress? The game is the same. If they were proven to be the best at their level never understood why soo many fail. Is it just easier to put coach people and direct your teams to wins and can’t do that as much at higher levels. Same for basketball. Why is it that you either strike gold or hit poo with choosing a successful young up and comer.

Why can’t you put the best D2 football player in the SEC and have them step in and dominate? There’s levels to this. Everyone in the SEC is the absolute best at what they do, it’s pretty insulting to the coaches to act like they’re not on a completely different level than someone who can win a natty at Southern

I don’t know about coaching. But in my line of work, when I was an engineer doing technical work by myself, just make things work, figure out what this product does and if it will solve our problem — I was great at that.
But now …. deal with this team of 10 unqualified, uninterested, or just inexperienced people, and get all of THEM to do what you used to just go do by yourself. It’s very hard. I have trouble everyday explaining to people how to do things that I used to just do alone without much thought.
Coaching must be like that. It’s a very different job from OC/DC. Different role, different activities everyday, different priorities.

Understand they are the best but when coaches move up they are coaching better players too. Seems like they only succeed about 10% of the time when it should be closer to a 50/50 shot. Not saying to get the next great championship coach but at least someone that can build u up. Heck Indiana coach came from JMU and brought a bunch of small school kids with him and went to playoff year one

If this was 2015 I’d agree with you. Not the same era. G5 schools don’t really deal with the same level of bolsters. The same level of expectations and the same level of NIL deals. Plus your staffs are much larger now and you have to manage a whole helluva lot more. For some coaches I think it could work but it’s a huge risk to take on someone. Just my opinion
