re: Why cant LSU keep a coach for a long tenure?

Sarge 6 yrs. is a long tenure these days. Especially when the fans treat you the way they treated Miles. Come on I was in the stands when they boooed him and his players this year. I'm sure that factors in somewhere. A month ago all I heard on this site and outside of it was Miles please leave. Where are those people now. Its scarey that they may be about to get what they were wishing for earlier in the year. Oh and by the way if we would have lost to the Aggies there is no dought a lot of the fan base would have been calling for his head.

Dude. One was an egomaniac who went to the NFL (a position he stove for for years). The other might go to a dream job to build up his alma mater back to it's glory.

Is that hard to grasp?

There are very, very few programs where a coach would likely stay his entire career. Even then, it depends on the coach's final goal.

For instance, I would put USC in the list of schools where a coach would never want to leave, yet Pete left for the NFL because he obviously wanted to be there long-term. The list of jobs where a coach would probably stay forever IMO are:

Notre Dame
USC
Florida
Alabama
Texas
tOSU
Michigan

That is it. Now, before I get berated, let me explain. Notre Dame and Michigan are obviously down quite a bit, but if a coach would turn those programs around, unless the NFL comes calling, I cannot imagine a coach leaving those programs. Florida, Texas, tOSU, and USC are self explanatory. To further explain, those are the schools I cannot imagine a head coach voluntarily leaving for another college. NFL, maybe, but not another college. Now, just because a school is on that list does not mean that they can cherry pick their head coach, ala Harbaugh/Michigan and Mullen/Florida, but rather, a head coach in place would not leave for another college gig.

Programs like Oklahoma and LSU are on the cusp of that tier, but not quite there.

In the post-Mac eras, all but Arnsparger and Saban and Miles, left due to a shortage of wins and consistency.

Arnsparger was an ancient pro DC when hired, he took a payday at Fla as AD, thus not a football HC related move.

Saban wanted to test the NFL, and was offered monster bank.

Miles has reached the pinnacle of NCAA Football at LSU(like Saban), now his alma mater needs fixing badly.

LSU gets a bad rap, and undeserved one over being a HC graveyard, that was the notion in the post-Mac era until say Arsparger arrived, then began again in the Archer, Curley, Dinardo run, or until Saban arrived. It's an unsophisticated notion for outsiders that don't break it down properly.

LSU formerly didn't pay top salary, nor have modern facilities, and also hired on the cheap, thus less-than-ideal hires. That hasn't been the case in over a decade.

If anything, it could be argued that in the modern cases of Saban and Miles, coaching attrition has become a product of LSU's own success being a detriment to retention.

This is #1 on the list of people who try to explain why Miles would leave, but that is total bullshite. Do you think the expectations will be lower for Miles at Michigan? Of course fricking not. Coaches at big time programs deal with the pressure or get out of coaching (Meyer), but leaving LSU for Michigan does not lessen the stress on Miles. If anything, he will be faced with the possibility of running his alma mater into the ground.
