Gus would be a better hire than Smart IMO. Gus could keep most of the recruiting staff in place and keep Van Gorder as DC.

So with Gus you basically get an elite offensive and defensive coordinator. With Smart you only get an elite D coordinator and an unknown at OC.

I would imagine Auburn fans would hate that idea.

Most Auburn fans want him to stay and view Chizik as the problem rather than BVG. I think BVG has proven that with the right players and system he can run a defense.

I just don't think Auburn is that great of a job. No real recruiting base. Wedged in between Alabama and UGa, two major SEC powers. High expectations. Almost every successful coach ended up under NCAA investigation. I'd avoid that job like the plague.

This post makes no sense. Auburn is located in some of the most fertile recruiting territory in the country. Most would consider Georgia, Florida, and Alabama to be an excellent recruiting base. Alabama doesn't recruit any better than Auburn without Nick Saban as their head coach, and Georgia has had no more success throughout their history than Auburn. We all compete for the same players and each school gets their fair share.

Also, Auburn hasn't been on probation in 20 years, and violations are relative to each particular staff so I'm not sure how the investigation portion is relevant to the coaching search. Auburn is a top ten revenue producing school with a large fanbase, excellent facilities, great tradition, and will pay its coaching staff whatever it takes to win. Those are typically factors one considers when deciding if it's a great job.

I still think it will be Petrino. He's damaged goods, Auburn is damaged goods.

Kinda like hoping 2 wrongs make a right.

It's smart. Confirmed by a friend who got it from Kirby himself.
