they're not the most talented bunch, but they could easily be in the 30s with the right DC in the Big10
rich rod is a good DC and 1 more offseason from coming close to winning the conference, imho

He neglects the defensive side of the ball in recruiting. I don't know if getting a 4th different DC in 4 years will help.

Yes defense is bigger problem than the offense but I think you are to quick to say that the offense is good enough to win the conference if the defense played better.
This isn't the Saints of the last 3 years that just needed an average defense to make the playoffs. UM will needed improvement on both sides to challenge for the Big-10.
A better DC could get them to a 3, 4 loss team and a resoectable bowl next year though assuming offense plays the level it did this year.

Nope. Casteel stayed at WVU. Though there are rumors he's going to Florida State.

It's going to be interesting to see what a lot of teams do at DC.
ND, FSU, UVA, Colorado, among some others will be looking for DCs and likely will have better chances for success than UM and all of its offensive players.
While its nice to turn athletes from offense in high school into defenders for their athleticism, it takes a certain personality to be a good/great defender, and most offensive recruits don't have it.
Big 10 overall will still suck, but lots of teams will get better next year. I can't see Michigan going better than 7-5 or 8-4 next year.
