Joe Lorig at Memphis should get the first two calls.

Memphis finished the regular season with the nation's No. 2 kickoff coverage unit and No. 4 kickoff return unit. Also 9th in net punting.

They were also awesome in 2015 under the guy who followed Fuente to Va Tech.

So that might be aftershock from him.

Beamer's got a kid doesn't he? He's got to know something about ST if he coached under his dad.

I haven't looked up his stats yet but he worked under his dad, Spurrier, and Fat Phil.

He was also the recruiting coordinator at USCe when they landed Alshon, Stephon Gilmore, and Lattimore.

Mother fricking this. Have been touting this guy for weeks. Also have a Groza award nominee kicker who kicks touchbacks over 90% of the time, and have had 3 kick returns for TDs after an FBS-longest drought since 1996.

Memphis struggled all around in Return coverage last year. This guy fixed it immediately, and made them the best all around ST unit in the FBS. Coming from Memphis, he won't break the bank.

Oh, and he also coaches OLBs, so he's a perfect replacement for Peveto if we go that route.

They were actually just as good in 2015 as 2016. Their kicker is ridiculous.

They gave up 0 kickoff returns longer than 30 yards (1 in 2016) and 15.56 yards per return (15.45 in 2016).

#2 in the country in both rankings in 2015 and 2016. The previous coach, who left with Fuente to Virginia Tech, is an outstanding ST coach in his own right.

Also, they actually got worse in punt return defense. They went from 81st nationally in 2015 to 88th nationally in 2016.

Kickoff returns however they got much, much better under Lorig. They went from 29th nationally to 4th. Improved slightly in punt returns under him as well.

ETA:

Fun fact, in 2015 LSU was #128 out of 128 teams in punt return defense, but #24 this past year.

Also, just so people understand what Peveto brought to the table in 2016:

SEC Rankings:

Opponent Kickoff Returns: 3rd
Opponent Punt Returns: 2nd
Opponent Long Kickoff Returns: 6th
Opponent Long Punt Returns: 1st

Our defense was solid on special teams to be honest.

Interesting statistic though, our opponents made by far the highest % of their FG's against us in the SEC. They went 22/23 for 95%.

They went 16/21 76% against Bama and 11/22 55% against Missouri.

Memphis has finished in the top 10 according to ESPN FPI Team Efficiencies 4 years in a row. Different coaches during that span though.

LINK

Also, LSU was 117 out of 120 in ST which makes me a believer of this stat.
