What's the obsession w/nfl coaches

I just don't see the obsession with getting nfl coaches to coach college ball. I'm purely basing this on dave wannstedt and callehan crapy arse jobs their doing. I mean nfl and college are two completely different animals. I'd rather see a big time college coach switch over to LSU.

agree except Del Rio would be a great fit at LSU
that, and there aren't many great college coaches available right now

Callahan and Wannstedt were terrible NFL coaches also.
Good NFL coaches can make good/great college coaches.

Not my statement, but I'll take a shot- has family ties to the state and school, defensive background, nice playing career in the NFL, young, good looking, speaks well, spent pretty much his entire career coaching in or near the south so has good name recognition, oh and he has been successful as a NFL coach.

I think NFL coaches have credibility coming from the league which if you're recruiting a player to LSU he likely has aspirations to play professionally. If I were a player I definitely wouldn't overlook a coach who has been there and knows what it takes.

I don't have a problem with the guy, I just find it funny that everyone says "Jack Del Rio, he'll be a great fit here at LSU." This is similar to "LSU has more talent than everyone else."
His family ties won't win him anything here.
His NFL playing career won't win him anything here.
Speaking well does not equal winning.
The only thing you said that makes sense is the name recognition thing, for recruiting purposes.

Being able to say to a recruit I played in the league for 8-10 years helps with recruiting.

You are absolutely right. It's a wonder our program didn't just shut the doors after the beauty pagent duo of Hallman and Dinardo. However, if Yoda was an outstanding football coach, we'd hire him. Not a top criteria at all.

This is all true. Unfortunately, it doesn't equate to winning every time. Jack Del Rio very well might be a great coach at LSU one day, but none of the reasons above are going to keep him here. He has to win. Plain and simple. And if he doesn't, he will take his good-looking, connected, experienced and well-spoken arse somewhere else.

Nothing equates to winning every time. There is no formula for guaranteed success when picking a coach. You have to look at the evidence and make an informed decision on who you think will be best.
Long time NFL player, well spoken, NFL coaching experience(position, coordinator, and head coach), good appearance/impression isn't a bad place to start.

You listed a bunch of qualities that Jack Del Rio possesses (or at least that you assume he possesses), and then try to use those all to exhibit why Jack Del Rio would be a good fit at LSU. Only one of them actually had anything to do with coaching ability, so I am sorry if I question whether or not he'd be successful based on whether he is good looking or not or if his daughter went to LSU. Those reasons are really stupid and you know it.
Again, I ask, if the ugliest person on earth was fully qualified to coach, experience-wise, he would not be a good fit because of his looks?

NFL is > college. Why Jack Del Rio, or any other successful NFL coach would leave the NFL to coach college is beyond me, but for the sake of argument, there are 10 times as many college coaches that would be qualified in the same exact way, except they might not be as good looking or have a daughter that went to LSU.
