What possible harm could have come from waiting 48 more hrs on Herman?

First, this article confirms we wanted Herman more than O, since we offer Herman the damn job first and had agreed in principle to hire him.
Second, according to article, Herman was wary of UT because of politics. His talks with UT could have simply confirmed his suspicions.
If Herman spoke with UT and indicated he was trending in that direction, or made really outlandish demands, then O would have still been there waiting. No one was going to snatch him up. He's not a hot commodity.
Instead of giving Herman the courtesy of talking with UT, Alleva appears to have made the reactionary midnight decision to just hire O. That strikes me as wildly petulant. THIS is business. YOU can't be emotional. YOU have to expect that candidates will use all of the leverage at their disposal.
The sum result is that we ended up with a fallback coach without even knowing if our preferred hire would have said no. How amateurish.
Bottom line there was no significant harm in waiting a couple more days.
Here is the article, for those who haven't seen it:

Herman was never coming here once Texas fired Stong. He wanted that job.

Alleva is too prideful. He is also borderline unstable.

You're assuming that Alleva has a brain and isn't a fricking teenage girl that gets his feelings hurt if a coach wants to hear from both parties that are offering him a job.

Alleva should know the business of the game
Let it play out don't get emotional and just pull it
That's pathetic

Take a week and interview more coaches and then decide

Then wait to make him say that or indicate that with his behavior. DON'T just react out of pride.

Alleva is nuts
He forced the Duke coach to resign or be fired over wrongful allegations
I still hate that is who our AD is
How did he wind up here

If you believe the story and he had a deal in hand wouldn't wanting to wait to hear what the school you've been projected to go to for 2 years now be that indication?

Further, what harm is here to wait a month and do your due diligence? Ed O wasn't going anywhere. Fml

Does it occur to you people that maybe TH ALWAYS wanted to go to Texas? Once he knew it was possible, he waited for it to open and went where he wanted to go. The majority of his coaching experience is in Texas. He was a grad assistant at UT.
JA should have been looking at other candidates than the one whose dream job was about to open up.

Why not at least interview other candidates?
