What Makes A Coach "Good"?

What traits or accomplishments make a coach "good"?
On one hand, you hear people refer to a coach like Gene Chizik and say that he only rode Cam and Malzhan to a championship.
On the other hand, you hear people say that Saban is a great coach because he wins championships at schools that naturally recruit great players and coaches.
So, what makes a great coach? Is it recruiting top talent or is it game day coaching? Saban and Miles are no doubt great coaches but they havent won a NC with inferior talent. Why is Chizik faulted for having the best player?

Because Chizik's record outside of having that player is pretty poor. Before you tell me that no one can win at Iowa State, I'd like to point out that they had the previous coach won there and the coach after Chizik won there. It's a matter of perception. We'll see if Chizik is a good coach or not. Miles, Saban, and Petrino have proven they can maintain success at the college level at different programs.

good coaches recruit good talent and hire good asst coaches that coach that talent up. they have good game plans and "manage" their teams well; ie set the tone for kids going to class, staying out of trouble, etc. to be considered good, the coach must do these things over a period of time. asst. coachs move on, players move on, etc. if gene chizik is a good coach, it will become evident over the next few years. he did a great job last year with a stellar OL and arguably the best qb ever to play in college. can he rebuild the team w/o cheating? time will tell.

Until very recently Miles was in the same boat. The press just likes Saban and is starting to warm to Miles. Perhaps it just takes time and victories.

Recruiting, organization, showmanship, attention to details, X's and O's, pushing the right buttons at the right time, OC/DC and assistant coaching hiring and firing decisions...........

In my opinion:
1. Ability to recognize and hire quality assistants
2. Formulating an overall plan with respect to the organization, schemes, philosophy on both sides of the ball, and recruiting
3. Communicating that plan, and keeping everyone on the same page.
Too many people look at scheme and other football-specific items, but I think really good head coaches have broader skills and talents. It's why so many coordinators are unsuccessful at making the jump to being a head coach. There is soooo much more than watching film, and designing plays. Way more.
