He is leaving Notre Dame because he thinks he can't win a national championship at Notre Dame.

If he stays to coach the playoff game, his players would know he thinks they can't win it all.

He can't coach in that game.

Let him coach the game great free publicity for LSU
Now that recruits and current players know the damage has been minimized

when ND hired him, he was undefeated at cincy and he negotiated to coach the bearcats in the title game if they qualified. they didnt make it despite being 12-0 that season, so he left

im guessing there was a similar conversation with lsu
