ESPN "journalist" Ivan Maisel is defending Michigan and Rich Rodriguez.
It's garbage like this that has to be stopped. Petrino and Saban are mercenaries. But Rodriguez is a hero.
Because it's Michigan.

Rich Rodriguez said he wouldn't leave West Virginia, his alma mater. He said it a year ago when Alabama offered him a lucrative contract. He said it earlier this month. On Sunday, Rodriguez left for the University of Michigan.
quote:
Rodriguez's decision to leave is justifiable because there's a difference between saying, "I will never leave," and "I will not be the next coach at _____."
quote:
The latter is exact. Once you say that publicly, you have committed not to take a specific action. Rodriguez protected himself.
quote:
But no matter how many Missouris and West Virginias threaten to stage a coup d'etat in this sport, there will always be royalty. Think of the schools whose tradition is immediately recognizable across the nation: USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, et al.
quote:
Michigan might be the last of these jobs open for a while.
quote:
Rodriguez already had turned down one of these jobs. A year later, he had a chance at another one. No slight to Alabama, but Rodriguez is a more natural fit at Michigan.
quote:
Don Nehlen, who turned West Virginia into a regional power in his 21 seasons (1980-2000), came to the school from Bo Schembechler's staff at Michigan. He made the Mountaineers uniforms look like an Allegheny version of the Wolverines'.
quote:
If he achieves the level of success with the Wolverines that he had with the Mountaineers over a long period of time, Rodriguez will be a worthy successor to Fielding Yost, Fritz Crisler, Schembechler and Carr. To be mentioned in the same breath as those coaches is the reason any coach who craves competition gets up in the morning.

You got it right. The key difference is that Rodriguez went to MICHIGAN and the other two are just scumbag coaches in the SEC. He would be defending either of the other two in the same way if they were Michigans new coach.

Exactly right. fricking yankees, all of them. Come on down boys and get ya some in the dome. I can't wait for this game. We are going to think we are watching gladiator LSU is going to kick their arse so bad.

Wow... it is really amazing how they are bashing on the SEC for how we hire coaches. Now this RR thing happens and nothing. I don't get it and it's really starting to piss me off.

Michigan and RR did nothing wrong. There is no reason to bash either of them.
I don't have a problem with Petrino leaving the Falcons either. He knew he wanted out and he jumped on his chance rather than risk that chance being gone at the end of the season.

Okay. So what did Saban and Petrino do wrong? We're just pointing out a double standard.

Absolutely nothing. They considered a move that was better for them and they took it. If a man thinks he has a chance to better himself, more power to him. Call em greedy or whatever, they made the choice that they thought was the best for them. Same thing for RR. Saban or Petrino go anywhere else besides the SEC and nobody would say anything. Everybody hates a winner(SEC) when they're not on the winning team.

Well you see my stance on Petrino above. I have no problem with Saban either. A lot of LSU fans, for some stupid reason, feel like Saban shafted them personally.

Exactly... just pissed that ESPN bashed Saban/Petrino but are not doing the same with RR.

I could see why some would bash Petrino. I could see why some would bash Saban.
I don't see why anyone would bash RR over this, but I didn't follow the situation very closely either.

Miles got bashed and he didn't even go anywhere! ESPN can lick a nut. Seriously they are spiraling out of control with all this nonsense.

Saban flat out lied, then left.
Petrino left mid-season after lying to his owner, skipping out on his players, and giving his resignation over the phone.
In Petrino's defense, its slowly coming out more side of his story which helps some.
Rich Rod finished his season, addressed his players, and sat down with 2 meetings with his AD. He did not lie during the courtship but instead did not address it. If you want to give him flack, I would do it more over leaving his alma mater and not settling to build the program there. In that point he probably deserves it, and the WVU boards seem to be ladling it out.
It is unfortunate imo that this thing could not be signed and delivered until after the bowl game. However, this is my take on what happened. This fits with what has been posted here and on other boards. Rich Rod was unhappy privately with his AD and the lack of progress on his promised facilities. Michigan comes calling, he agrees to hear it out, but does not confer with his AD. RR waffles on it for a day, and ends up leaning towards staying. The AD and boosters get PO'ed because he went behind them to even meet with Michigan, and basically outs him after this and last years Alabama deal. So while he may have ended up wanting to stay, he poisoned his chances of staying and has to leave.
In the minds of the media, he really didn't do anything wrong. Coaches are supposed to be allowed to hear offers. In the minds of the WVU fanbase, he stabbed them in the back and they want him dead.

I don't think it's as much the individuals involved than it is the media's perceptions of the programs themselves.
Alabama is a bunch of delusional nutcakes who obviously aren't above cheating to win football games.
Arkansas. Ditto. All SEC schools are the same.
But Michigan...The Victors. Following in the footsteps of Crisler and Schembechler and Carr. One of the most storied football programs in football history.
They could have focused on Bear Bryant and all the national championships for the Alabama story. Or Frank Broyles history as a head coach with Arkansas, but they didn't.
And they could have focused on the "Fab Five," or aleged drunk Gary Moeller at Michigan, but they didn't.

Did they turn down their bowl invitation or something? I thought they still had one more game left to complete their season
Don't think he was given an option to keep quite and finish it out after the bowl. Like I said, the school wanted him out NOW and wasn't going to wait till after the bowl to announce anything.
As for Michigan going after him before bowl season starts, unfortunately because of the way recruiting works they needed to get something done. The fact that they floated this out to him during the dead period somewhat suggest to me that maybe something could have been worked out on the back end, but WVU was to pissed off by him even considering to let that happen.

That is some hella spin, isn't it?

First, you have to give RR credit for handling the situation better than Saban and Petrino. Instead of denying interest he issued a no comment. As many said after the Saban fiascos this is the best way to handle the job.
Second, it appears that the situation between RR and the admin had deteriorated because the WVU admin did not live up to promises made (specifically, facilities) made to RR when he was hired and when he turned down the UA job. If that is the case who can blame the guy for leaving?

i do like how lsu is politely left out of the list of football "royalty"...yet we have had more success than nearly every school up there in the past years...its just one of those small details that points out the obvious bias in an article like this

More ESPN "experts" are jumping on the bandwagon this morning. Here's a sample:
SKIP BAYLESS: Michigan is a top five program
MODERATOR: Is Michigan still a top five program
SKIP BAYLESS: Well, it will be now.
