USC used smoke screens for hires like Riley, so Oklahoma doesn't get wind of it and make a last ditch effort rally boosters, send in Bob Stoops and folks similar to guilt trip him, make him have second thoughts etc.

Riley was locked up for weeks with USC and the LSU/Riley smoke was absolutely used to A- keep the attention off of who LSU was actually targeting and B-prevent loose lips from killing the USC/Riley deal
