Tom Lemming on Al Golden hire

"The pressure was enormous for [Kirby Hocutt] to come up with a good guy," Lemming said. "Now, you have Jimbo Fisher at Florida State and Florida, who replaced Urban Meyer with a great choice in Muschamp. Miami needed a good recruiter and could have really suffered, but they hit a home run.
"With Al Golden, I believe he's as good as Nick Saban, Urban Meyer. Pete Carroll, Mack Brown and Jim Tressell, who I consider the top five recruiters in the country. He's as good as those five, he just never had the platform like he will at Miami.
"I'd be shocked if he doesn't get [Teddy Bridgewater] and others back. I think he'll turn it around pretty quickly and he'll have a good class. And next year they'll have a great class with a full year to do it. I don't have any doubt he'll have a great class next year. He'll be right up there with Florida and Florida State like they always were. This year, he'll have a quality class, just not as good because most kids are already committed. But if anybody can get them back to the glory days of the 1980s and 1990s where talent was oozing out the door, it's Al Golden."

huh?
Also, I'm biased, but I truly believe Les Miles is a top 5 recruiter in this country.
And Mack Brown doesn't recruit. Kids come to him. Look at their class on a map this year.

he placed together some of the best classes in USC history during consecutive years. he frequently finished in the top 3 nationally recruiting each year while there.

I dont put any stock whatsoever in Tom Lemming's assessmemt of anything
he's in a handfull of people's (namely ND) backpocket and is just a whore to the recruiting game. He's just like Mel Kiper - give him the right stroke, and he'll pump up anybody

Because he IS not one of the top 5 recruiters in the nation. If you're going to name the top 5 in the nation, you can't name guys that aren't even coaching in CFB.
Also, and no matter what, it will sound like sour grapes and excuses but it's a little easier to recruit to Southern California than other programs. Plus they have such a great communications school which they can promote to kids for sportscasting after the NFL or if their career doesn't work out. It's near Hollywood and they get to hang out with Snoop Dogg.
I'm not saying Carroll wasn't one of the best because he was but I don't know that I would have called him one of the top 5. Same with Mack Brown. Just my opinion obviously.

Pretty lofty expectations Lemming is putting on him....for Miami's sake and his...I hope he is right. Does he keep Whipple as OC though? He is also going to lose Hankerson too. Lotta holes to fill in the Miami program talent wise, but they have the rep and fertile Fla talent to fill them

The guy made TEMPLE relevant (in terms of going to a bowl game). Freaking Temple. They were the Vanderbilt of the Big East, and then the Vanderbilt of the MAC.

Its definately smart to first and foremost get a guy that can bring the talent back to Miami that they were used to. Then if you have to bring in another coach in 3 or 4 years...you at least have a great talent base.

if these places just recruted themselves as you are suggesting, then why where those programs down before Brown or Carroll got there?

Syracuse has a great communications school and a lot more alum in big jobs in sports. UCLA is also near Hollywood and in a nice area, not the freaking hood. Snoop didn't show up until they started winning. Give credit where credit is due. Is it that hard to sign guys from Hoover to Alabama? Guy's from W Monroe to LSU etc?

Notice that I said that it was "easier to recruit there" and not "these places recruit themselves." I'm not totally throwing Brown and Carroll under the bus, I'm willing to admit that they are great recruiters but a lesser recruiter can pull people to Southern California before other places like Philadelphia. As far as why they were down before Carroll got there, I have no idea. In fact, a buddy of mine and I were just talkinga bout that Saturday. I don't know the answer to that. The only thing I can come up with is that BAD coaching can even out the talent field.

But is not in the heart of one of the most talent rich areas in the country for football. Many of the guys that Southern Cal signs are from the West Coast (which speaks to being in an easier location) but they also bring in gems from out of state (see my point further down here).

Again, I think bad coaching can make up for talent. They were pretty good around 2000.

No, but it's harder to entice guys from out of state to come to places like Tuscy and Baton Rouge. And there are fewer guys in these states for us to mine (although the amount per capita is pretty high).
Again, the bottom line is that I never said they sucked at recruiting. I think they're great recruiters but I never looked at either of them and said "damn, that man can recruit his arse off. He's one of the top 5" I'm much more impressed when a guy like Dooley can talk people into Tennessee or Stoops to Norman, OK.
At the end of the day, it's just my opinion so it's not worth much.
