He was brought on by Nutt to replace his brother Danny after email gate, it was more of a PR move to soften that blow as Tim's dad is a well respected figure here in the state, especially by the big money boosters. His dad was the head of Razorback Foundation at the time.
He only coached McFadden, Jones, and Hillis in 07.
When Petrino was hired, Horton kept his job because he was the only one along with Allen on staff who kept "working" for Arkansas in regards to keeping the recruiting class together. He really didn't work as hard at it this time around until CBB was hired. He spent more time trying to find another job, which is fine.
He started his coaching career at App. State, FWIW.

I'm pretty sure Gus burned several bridges in the state with his rapid exit from ASU. He will need Horton to get any Arkansas recruits. I've never been under the impression that Horton was all that good anyway. His one job was to recruit Arkansas and half of our good players end up going out of state.

He came during the off-season when Malzahn left to go to Tulsa.
Email-gate lead to Mustain/Williams to SC.
LEE back to Arkansas as Co-OC, then OC when Gus when to Tulsa.
Horton here as RB coach as Danny's brain started bleeding again, so he couldn't coach.
Danny is trying to get the HC job at Arkansas Tech this year, so the bleeding must of stopped.
Email gate led to the FOIs, banners being flown, etc. eventually leading to Nutt being at Ole Miss.

so what happens when Horton and Gus play Arkansas next season and beat them by 40 points, that is gonna be a hard one to swallow for the big boosters and the heat on Long will be unbearable.

it's also important to note that Danny Nutt, not Tim Horton was D mac and Jones / Hillis coach up utnil D mac's junior and Hillis' senior year. Horton got them for 1 year

Educational points within this thread: Didn't know Nutt had a brother. Also, never knew about the email scam. I mean, I heard some rumblings, but didn't keep up with the situation. Why did Nutt run off a 5* QB again? Not to get off topic, just wondering.

Nutt has several brothers.
Danny was on staff with him.
He has another, Dickey that coached basketball at Arkansas State, he was there before Brady and coaches at Southeast Missouri now.
Another coaches at Ouchita Baptist University.
He has another that was/still may be a scout for the NBA.
Their dad played for Rupp at Kentucky before transferring to what is now Oklahoma State, he coached for years at the Arkansas school for the blind and deaf.
The email gate was an email sent by a friend of Danny and Houston to Mitch titled "Dear Mr. Interception King" that was childish in nature, obviously, but basically was asking him to transfer, it was sent to his school email account. It eventually published in the Arkansas-Democrat Gazette in January 07 IIRC.
Why all this occurred is up for debate, little league parents, Nutt's ego, being forced to give up play calling, etc. it was a combination of things, no one thing. The equipment manager was mis-ordering Mustain's equipment, wrong sized shoes, linemen cut jerseys, shite like that, you can see Malzahn cut the sleeves of one jersey during the Alabama game so he could throw the ball for example.
Malzahn's nickname was "Highschool" by the other coaches on the staff at that time, FWIW.

It is hard to say. The only reason he came to Arkansas was because his daddy was head of the Razorback Foundation. I don't think he is terrible, but I'm not too sure he was all that good either. He is a nice guy.
Really, I never could figure out his angle. He had been moving up the coaching ranks for a decade and was promoted to be offensive coordinator at Air Force. And then, before ever coaching a down as OC, he came to Arkansas to be Houston Nutt's running back coach when Nutt was clearly on his last legs at Arkansas.
Then the Nutt posse moved to Ole Miss and he stayed. After Petrino, there were lots of people pushing him to be the interim coach and there may have been a bit of a power struggle behind the scenes with lots of the old guard supporting him and Long trying to avoid naming him interim. That struggle may have been what prompted Long to name John L. Smith all the sudden out of the blue.
So, all that said, it was probably time for him to move on. I kind of think his daddy got him to come to Arkansas with the goal of eventually maneuvering him into the head coach position. That obviously isn't going to happen, so it is probably best for him to get on with his career.
