This Was Easily the Biggest "Steal" in CFB History

Wasn't my first choice but give Scott his due.
And one last time, Riley was not a miss. He's an OC masquerading as a HC. I never warmed to the idea of hiring a HC and having to immediately follow it up with if he can hire this or that coordinator.
You hire Saban or Meyer or Kelly for that matter and they'll take care of the rest.

The only ones even close to this one is Jimbo to A&M and Riley to USC
Obviously Notre Dame in itself adds a whole different level of shock to the situation
(Saban/Bama and Meyer/OhioSt were obviously huge but weren’t CFB-to-CFB steal hires)

Kelly could've coasted into retirement at Notre Dame, and most college football fans expected him to.
When you look at the landscape of coaches around the country, I'm not sure enough people appreciate how big of a pull this was.

I wouldn’t call it a steal but more of a purchase.
It’s a good one though. He can recruit at a higher level and still compete and be able to win a NC.

LSU did not offer Riley, all the smoke was by his agent to get a good deal from USC.
And yet people will still listen to Matty Scones about how we wanted nothing but Riley until Saturday night.

Funny.
I see your point.

Riley may have been Woodward's #1 choice, but yeah, I doubt the Kelly deal only desperately came together in the last 48 hours.
Riley and Kelly share Trace Armstrong as an agent. Scott likely kicked the tires on each of them last month, and when he finally learned Riley was a USC lean, he zeroed in on Kelly. And Armstrong kept everything quiet from there.
That scenario supports why some of the CCB's supposed "insiders" kept hearing Riley, while actual media guys like Feldman and Dixon were not.
