From the article:
Wow. Is that a distinction without a real difference or a real thing?

And the athletic department will foot the bill; program sources told The Athletic multiple times in the past year that if Fisher were fired, donors wouldn’t be the ones paying the buyout. The 12th Man Foundation, the athletic department’s primary fundraising arm, will pay for an initial one-time payment of $19 million, and the athletic department will fund annual payments of more than $7 million, athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed the Sunday that Fisher was fired.)

Not turned down by Mark Stoops. Leery of the contract he just signed and how much money they would have to pay to get him. After paying Trashbo's buyout, they felt as it was throwing good money after bad money and couldn't justify it.

kind of feels like they had a plan. Seems pretty obvious that Mark Stoops was there first choice. And then, they went to their second choice after that.
I agree. I'm not even convinced they went all-in on Stoops.
It had been reported that Elko was the frontrunner for Michigan State, and Jonathan Smith was their second choice. If that was true, Elko must have been on A&M's radar immediately after Jimbo was fired, because Michigan State moved on to Smith quickly.
Stoops wasn't even connected to the A&M job until the last minute. His agent probably expressed interest, so Bjork talked to him, discussions went well, and Stoops name was leaked to gauge response. Aggies panicked, so Bjork went back to Elko. If there was zero plan, they likely would be stuck promoting Robinson or hiring Traylor.
