The Ricks portal news has me unnerved. Underscores how important this hire is.

Woodward needs to choose the right candidate or the program could quickly regress in the era of the unchecked transfer portal. Head coaches will have to consistently recruit and retain their own players, and they will have to win almost immediately or face defections. Losers will be punished harshly, and difficulties will compound, as the best players leave struggling teams.
This is a critical hire. The environment is high risk.
(And by the way, I do recognize that this is merely college football, not world geopolitics or the life of my family. Obviously, LSU FB pales in comparison to real world concerns. But still, I love the program and would hate to see it deteriorate further.)

O's biggest failings, imo, are his horrible roster management and inability to keep elite recruits on the squad.
Ricks entering the portal is in line with that.

The guy’s been wanting to leave since he got on campus. This one should not be a surprise to anyone. He was always going to leave.

Yeah. Seems like it’s been like that since he’s started. From homesick, to transfer rumors before this season to ending the season on the IL.
The kid is talented and I’m in the minority that I just don’t care about him. He comes off like he doesn’t want to be at LSU anyway. Since the beginning.

Those are the reasons LSU is changing its coach so that a positive and firm culture can be established and sustained.
