Whats wrong with him? I would be all for this. Hes a former QB so hed be good training the QBs, hes a RB coach, so he could help with the RBs, and hes from BR so he could help with recruiting. wheres the downside? maybe just the lack of actually being an OC? but hes basically the OCIW at UT?

Ummmm.... They went from having perennial 1,200 yard rushers to 500 yards or less the two seasons he's coached the RBs.

Leading Rushers:
2008 - McCoy (571 yards), McGee (376 yards)
2009 - Newton (477 yards), McCoy (368 yards of which 175 yards came against A&M last week).

The fact is that McCoy is an okay runner, it's not his strength at all, and yet he's led or been second in rushing for them 2 years in a row.

Their rushing attack is almost as bad as ours WITH JJ's sacks counted.

thats not his fault necessarily...the UT system is pass pass pass. maybe once colt leaves itll change but as of now i dont think its cuz of a lack of a run game its the system they run

UT isn't pass pass pass. They pass a good bit, but they can't establish a running back. That is their problem. With Jamaal Charles they had a running game with Colt at QB in 2006 and 2007. They can't develop their RBs because their RBs coach is a former QB.

Both years under Applewhite, UT has had a shite running game.

You CANNOT be serious? Are you suggesting your tea leaves indicate Major had an (air quotes) expectation to be the (air quotes) heir apparent?

I think he's only been OC for 1 or 2 years in his career with not so great results. Saban basically fired him and he found a job 1) coaching the easiest position to coach 2) at his alma mater. I'd like to see him succeed elsewhere (read: not Texas) before we give him the keys to our offense.

I wanted to like the guy because of his playing days and how I thought he got screwed over but when I met him he came across as an arrogant prick. I didn't like how he recruited one of our guys.

That is about as specific as I'm willing to get.

I"d call the below pretty good results.

quote:

At Rice, Applewhite moved the team away from the wishbone offense and moved them to a more modern, one-running-back formation[6] similar to that used by Texas.[7] During his one season at Rice, the team posted a 7–6 record and attended its first bowl game in over forty years.

Then he spent 1 year as the co-offensive coordinator at Alabama in which Saban would not commit to the one-back passing offense. Major Applewhite is not the first coach to spend one year with Saban and then leave.
