The only way I can possibly see why Tomlin would be interested in CFB

is he has a clear view of what the Steelers post-Ben plan looks like and he knows he wants no part of it.

He has just signed an extension through 2024 at $9.5mm per, which gives him security

It appears Big Ben is cooked and is probably going to retire

The Steelers Backup QB is Mason Rudolph and we know what that looks like as a starter

This is a really weak QB draft, and there isnt much out there in the FA market - Winston and Bridgewater are the top two FA QBs in 2022

He can not go to another NFL Franchise without compensation to the Steelers.

He could go to a CFB team, make $50mm and see if he likes it, this would also cancel his Steelers contract.

The Steelers could then hire a cheaper young guy, focus on the Post-Ben Era and rebuild the franchise

If Tomlin wanted back in the NFL he would be in his mid-50s and he could then go to any NFL team he wanted with the best situation, no strings attached

For the record I dont think it is real, just kicking it around

Tomlin sees what is happening in Cincinnati and doesn't want any part of being in the same division as that.

He's comin'.

I thought that initially but I'm starting to change my mind.

Corral, Willis, Pickett aren't bad prospects. Though it may not be as strong of a top 3 as 2021, that may work in the Steelers favor as one of the 3 could be available mid 1st where they usually pick.

but he's also with a franchise that won't fire him while they wade their way through it

side note its also crazy to me the steelers have never invested in a real development of Big ben's successor. Not only has he been fading for a while but he's always for an injury or two, makes little sense they haven't invested in a better back up

They've tried to draft backups.

Rudolph was a 3rd round. Dobbs was a 4th round. Landry Jones was a 4th round.

And to be fair, Rudolph is a pretty solid backup. Better than most backups.

But drafting a successor when the Steelers rarely pick anywhere close to the top 10 is tough.

Ben told reporters a few years ago he was mulling retirement after they got eliminated from the playoffs, the Steelers then drafted Mason Rudolph in the 3rd round and Ben went on a radio show and complained that they wasted a pick that could’ve been another player to help them win a Super Bowl in the last couple years of his career.

They’ve kind of bent over backwards for Big Ben, which is why they were basically stuck with him this season despite very clearly wanting to move in a new direction.

that's a good point, but the Steelers paying $9.5mm for a HC to go 8-8 with Mason Rudolph while a rookie QB sits on the bench would be tough to take

Corral to Eagles and Willis to Falcons could send Pickett to the Steelers maybe?

The Steelers are owned by the Rooney family, not Jerry Jones. He could go 8-8 for the next decade and he’d still be safe there.

I didnt think of that and it could also be a big part of it (Tomlin's agent using MSM contacts to fire shots to get the Steelers attention)

Maybe Tomlin wants to move on and the Franchise is committed to Ben to the point that he may drag the whole ship down as he physically erodes

Nah, they are only tied to him with this season.

They wanted him to retire this year but since he wanted to play they pretty much had to let him because he was going to cost the same against the cap regardless if he were on the team/cut/traded etc.

I get what you are saying from a stability stand point but I think history shows a different angle. The Rooney's are obviously loyal to HCs and pretty savvy financially and dont typically overspend. Jerry Jones stayed loyal to Garrett through numerous 8-8 campaigns but he continued to overspend

I wonder how much tolerance the Rooney Family will have for $9.5mm HC and QB re-tool and team re-build level performance on the field?

They’ve had 3 head coaches since 1969. Wonder no more.

You seem to be under the impression that the Steelers operate like the bengals in terms of being frugal. That is not the case

Yeah and in those 52 seasons they have had Terry Bradshaw and Ben Roethlisberger for 32 of them. Want to look at the QB situation and the team's performance in the other 20? I will give you Neil O'Donnell and the Kordell Stewart experiment but it is bleak and spotty and comical after that though

I never said that, but that is a pretty straw man you got there

Look I dont know what is going on in Pitt, but the League MO is hire a hotshot young HC (and cheap) to pair with a young QB and if you hit the right HC with the right QB you are golden for a long time. Maybe Tomlin wants to do that, maybe he doesn't. 15 years in one place is a long time

I am just trying to make sense out of IF Tomlin would be interested in CFB, WHY would he? The answer to me is reset his career, make a fat check in CFB and then if he doesn't like it he is free to go back to the NFL anywhere he wants.

for the most part, but corral might be the best prospect for the 21-23 draft period.

If Woodward can pull Mike Tomlin to LSU we need to double Woodward’s pay.
Would be the biggest coaching hire since Saban went to the Gumps.

Point is they are not ones to jump the gun on firing their coach, especially one that won them a super bowl and their ownership loves. It’s just not how they operate

You keep bringing up his salary like it matters at all. That’s like half decent right guard money, the Rooney’s do not care about that 9.5 million dollar contract.

It’s wasted energy. He’s not leaving for CFB. There’s nothing to make sense of. Some random old GM mentioned what he would do if he were Tomlin and people turned it into something completely different. It’s stupid.

He is an underpaid NFL coach given his resume & would be the highest paid coach in CFB probably for his full tenure.

If the smoke is all BS, I guarantee you he at least gets a raise. NIL/ESPN-SECtv era HC salaries will compete with NFL. Bookmark dat.

He’s the 5th highest paid coach in the NFL and just signed an extension. Seems like a weird time to leverage for more money a few months after negotiating a new deal

I had an outdated source on his pay. Really need to get my sh*t together today.

ETA Rooney’s extended him to 2024. Definitely looks like a pipe dream.
