The ONLY team interested in Miles during his tenure has been

MI. Other college and pro teams have not been beating down our down to hire Miles. It has only been MI rumors.
Both times, we freak and talk about out a new deal.
I have no problem with a new contract but make it performance based.
You win the SEC Championship game then ...
You win a BCS Bowl game then ...
You win the BCSNC game then ...
Our buy out is too absurd if he tanks.
Pay him a truckload based on wins. And forget about this lifetime roll-over BS.

Who is likely to be better ("better" defined as averaging 10+ wins a season, at least 2 Division championships, one SEC championship and one national championship over the next 6 years) and cost less than what a new contract for Les would provide?

No one is trying to hire Saban. It isn't b/c he's a bad coach... Saban & Miles have high money deals and no one is gonna try to buy them out. Michigan is the exception b/c it's Miles' alum.

Why does he need a new contract is the real question.
His current contract already has him as the nation's 5th highest paid HC. That is more than fair.

Not the point.
Point is we all want to forget about our pimples just because we finally dominated a game this year.
Pay him a shitload based on goal accomplishment.
Forget about this 18 million dollar buy out to terminate his employment.
I have no doubt that LSU will be able to hire a replacement that has the want and desire to win another championship.
The longer this drags out the more BS it is. Either Miles and MI want to dance or not. If they don't, nobody else is beating down the door.

OP misses a key point.
no one but the alma mater would have any pull for a coach who is already IN the SEC, already won a BCS title there, and is pulling in top ten recruiting classes every year.
no one else would even TRY to get Miles away from LSU.
They would be laughed at.
The interview been put off to Tuesday because coaches are already planning to be in north Tex for the coaches meeting.
If Miles was hot to trot, the interview would have been Saturday morning, the minute the game was over. If he were planning to leave, or intending to leave, he would need to maximize time in the HC role at Mich, so he could get back to Ohio and recruit.

Agreed. Michigan has the "come save your home team factor". If I was a coach and was in the same situation as Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, etc., the only team I'd ever listen to for a choaching change would be LSU.

Who says "restructuring the contract" means throwing a boatload of money at him? I'd like to see him get an extension, have more power with scheduling, and simply get a vote of confidence from the AD. I'm an admitted posi-Miles-Tiger, but I agree he's paid plenty. I'd like to see some serious achievement based incentives added, but other than that, I don't think more money (salary-wise) is the thing.

he's largely being paid what he is today on goal accomplishment. if he gets a raise it will be because the admin deemed it less risky to maintain continuity, given that the program is very healthy, vs. letting him walk and ending up with a 2nd or 3rd tier candidate. The "they'll be beating down the door" mindsight is very simple-minded.

I just tend to think that those believing that we should just throw more money at Miles in an attempt to coerce him to stay are very shory-sighted.
His compensation is more than market value. He is one of the highest paid in his profession. I do get the vote of confidence part, but that isn't aboue $$$.

Want and desire are fine. In fact, they are pretty much the same thing. Ability is different. Hiring a coach with the ability to do it is what is key. And how do you measure that? Past performance is as good a metric as there is. So who is likely to have the ability to do what Miles has done, based on past performance? Will that guy cost less by enough to justify the risk associated with the unknown vs. the known?

true.there are only so many schools willing or can offer more money and a few number that have bad coaches.

This may be more of a mutual respect get together.
I find the drawn out time frame a bit perplexing considering how close we are to signing date.
MI knew they were canning RR before the bowl. THe only hope RR had was a convincing win.
