THE CASE FOR CHAVIS

I am not over excited by this pick to begin with but after looking at were the LSU defense is this year we need help ASAP now!
1. Tennessee is not in a bowl game and is going to more than likley replace the exisiting staff. Chavis is probably not going to be a hold over from all indications. Chavis is probably shopping his options as we speak. LSU might be a good fit for him personally.
2. A man who has been in the SEC as long as Chavis is hard to find. He will be very familiar with Conference foes. He knows what it takes to be successful in the SEC because he has had some very productive years in Knoxville. He has consistantly been in the top 25 defenses in the country while at Tennessee.
3. He seems to be a pragmatist. Early in his coaching at Tennessee he was very agressive with blitzes and man coverages. Of late Chavis has moved to more of a zone concept teaching a more reactionary or read first principled defense. The reason for his zone schemes seems to be the recent decline in recruiting at Tennessee. He seems to base his coaching around what his kids can do rather than his personal philosophy.
4. Change from east to west. Sometimes a changing of the guard or a fresh location can bring out the best in a coach. In this case the players are more of my concern. The LSU defense was poorly coached wheter its reverses on DE's, missed tackles by LB, blown assignments by everyone, or DB's not staying on receivers. I just feel it was a wasted year because you saw absolutley no developement on the defensive side of the ball. Chavis as a freind put it to me will be more of a teacher and thats what LSU needs right now a teacher.
5. LSU has several weeks until they play in their bowl game. Chavis could come in and begin laying the foundation for the 2009 season. He could gain alot by working with the players for 3 weeks. Our recruits need to see the face of the new DC. They need to be reasured becaue some of them are not right now. Chavis could bring a steady hand to the ship and some much needed instant credibiity to LSU on defense.

He's allowed over 30 points a game to UF, UGA and UA the last two years. Unacceptable. Try again.

UT's defensive ranking:
2004 #45
2005 #7
2006 #50
2007 #70
2008 #4
and FYI, this year UT is 5-7 and in 2005 UT was 5-6.
Also, Chavis has been blasted lately for playing soft coverage which as we know everyone around her loves.

Who are we going to get right now?
Posted on 12/2/08 at 2:15 pm to Suntiger
Have you looked at the players on the defensive side of the ball lately at Tennessee not to mention that there offense is pathetic. I especially like this hire because his strong suit is coaching the linebackers. Sometimes it takes a move like this for someone to get motivated again, besides who wouldn't be motivated to coach the talent that we have on defense.

He is not my favorite pick like I said at the begining of my first post. LSU cannot wait until January for some high profile name.IMO Look every coach has down times in a career. You overlook alot of good talented men by looking at coaches over a 5 year period. Its like saying Marvin Lewis would not be a good hire as DC because Cincy sucked for 6 years while he was the coach.

People just automatically think Tennesse has great talent. Guess what they have shite playing out there on defense. Not to mention that terrible offense to go along with it.

Florida had 243 yards total offense against Tennessee this year. Try again.

And scored 30 points, right. And that was before their offense was clicking and while Tebow was injured. They gave up 59, 41 and 35 to those three teams last year when the won the SEC East. If that happens here fans will start jumping off the upper deck and aim for Chavis.

Florida-Tenn 2008
The Defense didn't lose that game for Tennessee. The D was solid.

The D gave up 147 yards rushing and about 50 yards in penalties, including an unsportsmanlike conduct 15 yarder (and a 9 yard face mask, meaning it was near the UT goal line). Sure, the offensive performance didn't help but I don't see that the defense stepped it up.
They have given up 89 points to UF the past 2 years. 89. They gave up 41 to UA in 2007. The UA team that scored 14 on La Tech. Is that what you want?

Sunitger, SugarBeaux1, Macavity92 shut the frick up and read this from a Tennessee fan that knows what he is talking about.

Guys, I just wanted to weigh in and let you know what some of us think about Chavis. A lot of the fan base is divided due to the Defense Struggling big time in early '07 and somewhat in '06. IMO most of the trouble in '06 was due to people playing on DL that didn't have SEC talent (Matt McGlothlin was a starter). This was due to recruiting deficiency and injury (Justin Harrell out for the season. In '06 the secondary was in shambles until about the Arkansas game.
That being said he was DC from '95 to '08. That's 14 seasons. In 10 out of 14 seasons our Defense ranked in the top 15, total defense. At the begining of his tenure from about '95 to about '99 We played a man to man with more blitzing. Of course with the talent level from '95 to '99 we could afford to do that. Since then we've seen more of a zone mix, playing quite a bit of Cover 3 and some Cover 2.
quote:
As far as personality. He's known to be an in your face type, moreso at practice, but sometimes during the game. I will say the Pass Defenses has been much better with him in the box. His early schemes relied heavily on good DL play, which I think LSU has an advantage of over us.

From Suntiger (see above)
UT's defensive ranking:
2004 #45
2005 #7
2006 #50
2007 #70
2008 #4 .
Apparently most of those good rankings were in the 90s, because three of the five bad years were recent.

Exactly so when he had the personnel it looks like he ran a good D. and everyone here thinks we have godly talent so he should do fine

I think it's comical that people would even attempt to tear down one of the most successful, tenured, respected, experienced, brightest defensive minds in the SEC.
I don't care what scheme you run or how much talent you have, if you can survive as a coordinator for 15 years in this conference at a school where the fans are arguably the most fickle about wins and losses as any other school, then you're a solid coordinator. You've done SOMETHING right.
Chavis is a solid hire any way you slice it. Will he be the savior of LSU and lead us to the top of the countries defensive rankings? Maybe, maybe not. But he is nonetheless a solid hire for LSU and all knowledgable SEC football analysts agree.
