Here's the thing.. if it was about money. Then why didn't he take the 10 mil per year from the browns and part ownership that was "offered" to him last year?
He's made over 40 million just while being at Bama, you don't think he would have been able to pay off any of that debt?
So he's just sitting there spending every dime he makes while waiting on his bad investments to put him into bankruptcy?
He hasn't had any businessman in Alabama cut him in on deals or investment opportunities when he's the most popular man in the state?
Very naive thread we've got going on, I guess it's just the Texas people that can do this stuff.

isn't that the same as having a "buy out"...which Saban does not like to have?
If the debt is real and that big, then Saban no longer is in control of that. He'll take the "buyout" + the money and run.

Because he was an Epic FAIL in the NFL and he doesn't like looking like a short little douche.

And if Saban is responsible for the Balance, isn't that the same as having a "buy out"...which Saban does not like to have?
Maybe the refusal to have a buy-out was an insurance policy for him to stay open for an offer such as this to come along. "One offer to rule them all."
I don't know, good question.

Just because Saban is a great football coach doesn't necessarily mean he is capable of fully analyzing a real estate/business investment opportunity. Not to say he is dumb just not his "area of expertise".
The idea that he would let big money boosters use him like a puppet is not in keeping with anything he has ever done.
I do find it hard to believe that wealthy UT boosters would assume his liability. If they have or will, wouldn't either Sexton or Saban had to inform them of the situation or has the financial problems been public knowledge along?

He's also the best HC in college football. Him leaving Bama means weaker Bama, which means stronger LSU.
LSU doesn't automatically get stronger. We still have to recruit against him and if Bama brings in a guy like Miles who can maintain the program, they'll still be just as dangerous.
Like others have said, the meltdown will be fun to watch but LSU doesn't benefit from this most likely.

The debt assumption is a good angle and maybe even a great selling point to go to UT...
I'm sure that Saban would have to fulfill the 10 yr deal (or whatever the so-called deal that is in place) and if Saban doesn't, I'm sure Saban would be responsible for the balance. And if Saban is responsible for the Balance, isn't that the same as having a "buy out"...which Saban does not like to have?
He isn't the kind of guy that would have a problem being "beholden" to fat cat, rich and powerful boosters. He doesn't mind one bit giving boosters that are holding his financial debt in their hands all the access to his program in the future.... He will glad hand and socialize with those rich oil barrons and buddy up to them every chance he gets, because they hold his financial future in their hands.
I have a hard time believing a man like Saban would agree to be a group of boosters "boy" for any length of time.

And in that same time he's paid about $18.2MM in interest only on a loan. That $40MM is a gross number, after taxes its likely more along the lines of $28MM to $24MM, net. So, after taxes and interest only payments on a loan you wind up with appx $10MM to $6MM in Net Income over that same period. Annualized its not nearly enough to tackle a $25MM personal guarantee on a property that your business partners creditors are trying to get.
Not naive at all. Plainly objective.

I have a hard time believing a guy like Saban would file for bankruptcy and spend the rest of his life being the next Lee Corso on gameday after he gets too old to coach.

So let me get this straight.. all the Browns rumors last year were a lie? There wasn't truth to them?
Ok now I feel like I should believe you guys about Texas then, I'm sure the same rumor about a college instead of the NFL is true!

Is this the bama version of ATPB?

quote:I highly, highly doubt that he's going to Texas, FWIW. He's pretty clearly just milking Alabama for more money. It's just funny to watch some get so up in arms about the possibility. For shits and giggles, though, do you think he'd turn down twice the money (plus ownership interest) to give big boy football another shot instead of staying for half the money and having to spend half his time begging 15-17 year olds to play for him? If so, I've got a bridge to sell you.
