hypothetically.. if Miles were to go to UM..

how would the fan base feel about Malzahn? He's a huge name, unproven as a HC, but he's guaranteed to bring in a sick offense..

If we're going to reach we may as well swing for the fence, IMO.

Yeah there was a reason you fired Carr. whenever has someone who got fired had such a huge shadow. He didn't retire. YOU CANNED Him

Yeah, and as Rich Rod went worse and worse, Mary Sue Coleman and co looked worse and worse. it is the main reason why Bill Martin was gone, as he forced Carr out, and replaced him with crap.

Malzahn is swinging for the fence? Are we talking Head Coach?

This is the whole story in the nutshell. I was so upset that Saban waited as late as he did to make his decision but found out later from the best friend of Terri saban's that he was really torn between the Dolphins gig and staying at LSU. I still think and only my opinion that Bertman did not do all that could have been done to keep Saban and Im not just talking about money , Im talking about 2 egos clashing. But to lose Miles at this stage in the game, really puts LSU behind the 8 ball and Im not sure that we could get who we think we can and I really dont have that much confidence in the powers to be making a great or even a good decision.

i'm talking about if we have to reach on a candidate.. no safe picks like troy calhoun, etc. All the 'safe hires' are not available or said no thanks.

Malzahn would either be a game winning homerun or a strike out swinging. I think his offense would recruit for him.. exciting offenses seem to. I'd like to see what he could do with a pass-first QB too.

Serious question: Why the hell does anybody care what Lloyd Carr thinks?

Hell, but hell no. He wouldn't be on my top ten.

No kidding. I can't even imagine the fallout if LSU hired Malzahn as HC.

He won a National Championship, or at least a share of one. He won at Michigan, the right way, and he is part of the Bo coaching tree. Plus many boosters at Michigan now claim they did not want him to go, even though many did back then, because he won, and took Michigan to major bowl games... 2 or 3 BCS games, and was successful against SEC teams. His haters will point to his struggles against the vest, and his struggles against PAC 10 opponents, but that is why he is relevant.

Coleman and Carr seem to have a paternalistic attitude towards the fan base at UM and appear to be in denial of the demands of today's college football programs.

First of all, this Ivy League envy leading them to believe they can get top coaching talent for $2 million or less just because they are Michigan is living in the past.

Secondly, the politics of the UM athletic dept having 'Bo' camps and 'Lloyd' camps is devisive to the point of shutting down the dept. They have an Athletic Director, why is Loyd Carr talking directly to the University President?

This is classic academic bureaucracy - a total lack of inclusiveness or teamwork. They look at all those sheepskins hanging on their walls and think that they don't need advice from anyone.

Before Michigan can find a football coach, they need to find some managers. Grown-up, adult managers.

In how many other programs do they check the new hire with a coach they fired?

Part of that is due to the fact Michigan has a "thing" about wanting to be known for academics rather than athletics.

That begs the question....how many does your football stadium seat again and how much money did Ed Martin funnel to the Fab 5???

Don't get me wrong...Michigan has an outstanding history in both academics and athletics.

I'm just not sure bout your "thing" comment.

That football stadium with only 65K will look mighty empty. Re: academics, didnt UM have a bunch of thugs on the BB ball team, especially during the Webber days?

Re: arrogance, RR was rejected by the Mich club in NY after mtg them when hired...they didnt like his persona, probably his accent, and that he was chewing gum when he met them. Guess he was supposed to pass that test and didnt matter that he was hired to be a football coach.

Saban was gone from LSU no matter what. If Bertman had ponied up that year Saban would have been gone after his next big year. Saban had the NFL bug up his arse. He was going to the NFL. Only after Saban got what he thought he wanted did he realize what he really wanted!

Great post here Wolverine, good luck with the search. Whether it ultimately ends up as Miles or other, I hope you get a good one. I personally find myself cheering against OSU and State so therefore, by default, Im a Michigan man.

No offense but from that statement Michigan sounds like a bunch of whiney biatches. You can be known for more than one thing and if you are going to do something wouldn't you want to excell at it no matter what it is? Also, if you are looking for a "good guy" the national perception of Les is of that.

quote:

I believe she is dead set against JH, and that would be due to comments he made a few yrs ago combined with Carrs dislike for him.

I guess pride is more important than success there. JH is a alum and a hot coach right now, a DUI, an altercation, and a few bad statements wouldn't make me reconsider hiring him.

Have you seen the size of the stadium y'all just renovated is now? How much y'all have spent on the big house?

Everything I have read points to arrogance and stubbornness as the best way to describe Michigan (or the powers behind it). Good luck with the search.
