pts: 30.7
total: 423.1
rush: 233@6.1
passing: 190@7.7

Not taking sides, just wanted some info out there. Its annoying how people love callaway but hate Graham Harrell when GH has more expierence, better stats, both come from the Air Raid and he actually ran the ball more or as much as Callaway.

Also the saints do not run RPO. That was a Moorehead influence on Brady. Moorehead is being mentioned now.

Joe Moorehead (since he is getting play)

2015 Penn State (pre moorehead for reference:
total plays: 868
Pts per:23
Yards Per: 349
Rushing Per:134 @ 4.1

2016 PSU (1st year)
total plays; 955
pts per: 37
yards per: 433
rushing per: 172@4.5
passing per: 261 @ 9.3 per

2017 PSU (2nd Year)
total plays- 938
pts per:41
yards per: 460
rushing per:170@4.9 per
passing per: 290@8.2 per

2018 PSU( Post Moorehead)
total plays- 931

Passing per: 218@7.5

oregon

2019(pre moorehead)
total plays: 981
pts:35.4
total- 433
rushing: 175@4.8
passing: 258@8.1

2020 with moorehead
total plays:392
pts: 33.7
total: 429.7
rushing: 180@4.9
passing: 250@9.2

Callaway @ sanford
2018- 121 yards rushing, 391 passing. 38.5 pts per, 4.1 per rush

2017- 81 yards rushing, 332 passing. 28 pts per. 2.9 per rush

2016- 96 yards rushing, 350 passing. 35 pts per. 3.6 per rush

2019 looks like he had 165 per game running but only 239 passing averaging only a little over 400 per game and the team went 5-7. 32.25 pts per. 4.1 yards per rush.

2015 Samford averaged 34.64 pts, 147 rushing at 4.2 per, and 2015 averaged 139 yards more per game.

2020 doesn't have stats, but as you can see they averaged less per game and pts stayed the same from before him to him.

Moorehead stats need a bit more context, both at Penn State and at Oregon.

Moorehead's first year at Penn State was Trace McSorley's first year as the starting QB as a RS Soph. Penn State's offense improved every year as would be expected as a young QB develops. Impressive that Moorehead improved Penn State's offense from 2015 with Sr QB Christian Hackenberg.

On the flip side, Moorehead took over after Justin Hebert at Oregon, working with another RS Soph in his first year.

I agree, but not gonna sit there and do all of that on top of this. Just like Longo needs context that he followed Hugh Freeze.

Saquon Barkley skews the Penn State numbers a bit too, both with Moorhead and after he left. That said, I really like him and would love him as OC. But I don’t think he has much interest in coaching in the SEC again with the way his family was treated. And does any SEC fan base like any of their coordinators ever? Pretty thankless job it seems. I doubt he’s willing to move from Eugene to Baton Rouge for the same position.

a name I would like to see atleast interviewed or vetted is Mark Helfrich. Big time QB coach and is out of work. Atleast bring him in to help as an analyst.

another Name that has popped up is Nick Sheridan, the Indiana OC. Only Been Oc for One year, was QB coach 17/18 & TE coach before that. was with willie taggart learning his offense at WKU and South Florida before that.

2019 Pre Sheridan
Pts per: 31.8
Total: 432.8
Pass: 302.4@8.3
Rush: 130.4@3.6
3rd down % 46.37

2020
pts: 30.1
total: 358.1
pass: 258@7.3
rush: 100.1 @ 2.9

So for me that would be a big no thank you based on stats alone!! But he is very well thought of.

read on the gulf coast offense that willie runs

Correct, good catch, thanks. Just fixed.

Also any other names anyone else wants to add....go ahead.

I will say looking at stats I like Sowder, Harrell and Longo but my first would still be moorehead just because he is much more of a know quantity on what you get.

I like Callaway too, but he is a poor man version of GH IMO. Think they would be great paired togther though.

well if you look at it this year....yea they are. Even Against Coastal when they only scored 17, they moved the ball very well and outgained Coastal.

in 2019 vs ranked teams

USC- 30pts/430 yards
Tenn- 29pts/339 yards
Utah- 12pts/300yds
Boise- 28/342

2018 vs ranked
Wisconsin- 24/311
Washington- 7/194
Utah- 17/357

so in the past it always hasn't shown up against better teams. He has had some stinkers too like

2018 Northern illinois- 7-6 game (only had 1 TO so thats not it.

2019 13-3 loss vs SDSU (3 TO)

so he isnt above having really bad games too.

No one is tbh. I'm gonna have to watch some BYU games to see just how well the offense worked. I really had no idea he was doing that well as OC.

Based off numbers vs lsu the past couple seasons ( not really my rankings, more of a ranking based off a deep dive into the numbers)

1) moorehead has to be #1 candidate. Safest and is 100% a homerun

2) Harrell is your next safest pick and if you get UNT GH, you are getting a stud with an offesne almost like 2019 lsu. USC GH is more like what we had this year with E.

3) Grimes looks good but outside of this year, his offenses have not been better than what we had this year. Could be great with Callaway as PGC.

4) Tom Manning- Consistent and would give you an offense only a little better than 2018. Better passing game though and could be great with the unique 3 TE scheme. But overall numbers are not going to look much different than 2018, just more consistent.

5) Longo has the stats but as i posted in the other thread, struggles against top defenses while at Ole Miss. Could be great but could bomb and is kind of risky. Personally I think he would be fine.

6) Sowder is another risk, could be amazing as he runs the veer and shot. Will run the ball for sure, but has srtuggled to pas at times and honestly the stats look very much like 2018 LSU. Again could be great paired with Callaway.

7) callaway is nothing but this years lsu offense or exactly what USC looked like. Great with the Passing game with Air raid concepts but overall is a risk.

someone posted this about Lombardi, he is a risk but I understand why some want it, to continue to the complex levels approach to the passing game.

quote:

complexity of that offense from the QB’s perspective is the reason I would want a guy like Lombardi as our OC. Between Max/TJ, Nuss, Walker, and potentially even Arch Manning, we are in the middle of a QB talent boom the likes of which we have never seen before at LSU, and so having an OC that can not only call the same plays as Brady did (which frankly anyone can do since LSU already has that playbook) but also TEACH CONCEPTS from the perspective of a longtime QB coach in the same offense is super desirable in my view.

You are correct that Lombardi (or potentially Callaway, as PGC) would need to add back in the RPO stuff, which is not a staple of the Saints offense. But I believe the RPO concepts are on the simpler side to learn for a QB, as you essentially only need to read one conflicted defender on a given play to decide whether or not to throw to a single receiver who is out in the route. I have no idea why Ensminger/Linehan appeared to abandon RPOs completely this season given its relative simplicity, but that is probably a conversation for a different thread.

My biggest take away from all this was...... E was a pretty damn good OC, better than I thought and all of the people clamoring for change and throwing out names have not looked at stats.

I will say with E, the passing game was very unorganized at times without brady for sure. If it wasnt, he would be considered not only a good OC, but a great OC.

First off, thanks for putting all this together! It looks great.
With E, the big stat that you’re not showing are 3rd down conversion. It was pretty bad, especially early on. The other 2 things to be considered that idk if a specific stat can really measure are drive sustainability and play calling that put our QBs in terrible positions. I’m no Myles fanboy, but God did E put him in some crappy spots with the play calling. We seemed to be able to establish the run against some teams one week, then be totally shut down the next week regardless of who our QB was or how good of a run D the opposing team had.
With all that being said I really like your suggestion of maybe bringing in a Veer and Shoot guy, like Sowder, and pairing with a PGC like Calloway.

I agree, also doesn't show some things like red zone td % and the like. Hard to find but I am going to try and find those stats tomorrow while sitting at work not doing much. That's what I meant by passing game being unorganized.

So going from memory, in 2016 once E took over we ran at will and pretty much moved the ball at will against everyone except bama. Seemed to be pretty organized and did pretty good on 3rd downs. Could have been much better in middle of the field but he was intern.

2018 we failed to play to the strengths of our players and adjust the passing game to something more modern and attack the middle of the field. Kept way to many guys in on routes with old school nfl 2 man route tree.

2019, well we know how special that was, prolly the most aggressive offense in cfb history.

2020, he failed to adjust some with myles, seemed to get better as the year went on with working with the freshman. Overall though we out up points and yards but struggled like you said on 3rd down and red zone, combine that with historically bad defense and you end up like we did.

Overall, we ran and moved the ball on everyone not named bama. And honestly playing bama is what has made everyone think he sucks, but judging from the stats...yea well they were wrong and he was better than we thought.

Do I think we can recreate 2019....nope, but I do think we can be somewhere between 18/20 and 19. I think there is a happy medium there that would make most of the fans happy.

Now many of the rantards are going to hate the hire no matter what, frick em in the neck, they are dumb shits anyways.

I will say it's funny people say Harrell sucks but his north texas offense, Stat wise is as close to 2019 that you can find.

Also think its funny how much people fail to realize that Callaway is a straight air raid guy with stats similar to Harrell has had at USC.

I do think Lombardi paired with someone that knows the RPO game and prolly Callaway could and would be a deadly combo.

How far apart would you say the distance is between Moorehead, Harrell, and Grimes? Like would you say that they are magnitudes apart in talent or is the differences incremental?

I mean Harrell is going to be the closest to last years pass to run ratio, different concepts but going to be more pass first. Reflected in the numbers

Moorehead and Grimes are going to be more run based and rpo based. Closer to 55-60% run.

Harrell and moorehead are qb coaches, Grimes oline.

Moorehead is the most proven for sure. I dunno if one is really better than the other, I ranked them more based off the numbers.
