Had he held out a yr he wouldve been playing 2nd or 3rd fiddle with Chip Kelly available plus any other top name that gets fired after this season.

Will anyone here bet with me that they WON'T be 7-0?

After that, Nebraska and Wisconsin are home games, and Minnesota and Northwestern are winnable road games.

9-3 is realistic looking at that schedule. If the hype is real and he is a cross between Anthony Robbins and Urban Meyer, 11-1 is not a pipe dream.

This guy is going to parlay 2017 into something huge.

Or if he stays and even remotely tries to build, his year 3 schedule has Nebraska and Wisconsin at home, and his East opponents are Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State.

So yeah, if he doesn't parlay 2017, he's looking at a B1G Championship Game in 2019. IF HE'S THAT GOOD.

This looks like an incredible short-term gamble to me.

8-4 is reasonable for sure with that schedule.

If he is a quality coach, he will be successful at Minnesota. Plus for the reasons already stated in this thread, Minnesota is not that bad of a gig.

Depends on what he thought he had coming back at WMU. If it was a senior laden team, they'd likely be terrible next year and his stock would plummet. If he has a terrible year at Minnesota next year, he can chalk it up to rebuilding

People are acting like Minnesota won two games this past season. They just went 9-4. Actually have a pretty underrated football tradition. (They've won SEVEN national championships. Obviously, none recently, but still.) Made a bowl each of the past five years and won at least eight games three of the past four seasons. Recently built a nice new stadium. They're in the weaker of the two Big Ten divisions. In a major city (which both should help with recruiting and will simply be nice for him from a lifestyle perspective).

If Fleck is truly a great and/or elite coach, he will contend for Big Ten titles (i.e., win his division) at Minnesota within the next 3 years. He can then parlay that into an opportunity at a top-tier program where he can compete for national championships. If he's not a great/elite coach, well, he'd fail at a top-tier program anyways.

lol no he hasn't. Minnesota isn't Purdue. If he can win at a P5 school it will show.

I think he should have but if he kicks butt at Minnesota bigger name jobs will be available. Places like a&m and tennessee have a really good chance of being open next year.

A&m or Tennessee would be lateral for him now.

good move for him, lot more money, in a power 5 conference, he got 6 recruits that were committed to him at his michighan school that are following him over to minnesota. must be a good coach. wonder where les miles will go. he should take lessons from bo pelini and go that route to a smaller school if he want to get back in coaching.

Might have had a shot at UF or ND if he'd waited until a next offseason.

I will say if he can get the off the field stuff cleaned up, the program is already in decent shape from Kill and the guy that just got fired so there should be some talent left over for him to work with and could still make that move next year or the year after

if he starts making big ten championship appearances, programs will be beating his door down

Minnesota is perfect opportunity for him to build something good at UM. Listen, Barry Alvarez built Wisky into a top program, but Minn / St. Paul is a cool place that could become a contender in the Big 10. Often, the most fun and biggest opportunity is to build a program, not inherit a program. Good move for PJ and Minnesota both. FYI, their weather is about the same as WI, IA, MI, NE.
