LSU needs to do whatever is necessary to get Shannahan.

Yes I know we have a coach and he's not being released, but one could dream.

Right now Saban and Meyer get to walk around like the Kings of the SEC. If we had Shannahan the tables automatically turn our way.

e.g. Recruiting Visit

MS: Hello (insert name here), my name is Mike Shannahan and I'm here to help you get a free education and one of these (flash Superbowl Champ rings).

Recruit: Where do I sign?

LSU was too stupid to not hire him nor Spurrier in 1987..when both were young..preferring Archer and Rutigliano..

Why would LSU want an MS or SOS today, when one has never had to recruit, and the other never enjoyed it, and is only further into his golfing than ever before?

They could both be great short-term stop-gap hires in a worst case scenario if the market lacked the talent, and/or LSU find no takers one day when the job opens.

And though I wanted SOS in the late '80s, when LSU had him no higher than about 3rd or 4th on their search list, both coaches are too old to grow with longterm, and lack the energy needed to stay on the heels of Saban and Meyer, both of whom's energy and intensity, run circles around MS and SOS today. I'm not saying neither couldn't match wits with the SEC's best, they can, and then some, possibly even exceeding it's two current marquee HCs on gameday wits? But, they do not have the vim and vigor that the SECCG's younger combatants have for modern-era NCAA HC duties.

A better list, one that has a 5+ year regime potential for longterm growth, is Brian Kelly, Chris Petersen, Charlie Strong, Gary Patterson, Wil Muschamp, Kyle Whittingham, Bronco Mendenhall, Jim Harbaugh, Jim Grobe, Tommy Tuberville, Steve Sarkisian, Kirk Ferentz, Paul Johnson, etc..

...is the shiznit. Best coach in outside the SEC IMHO. TCU will have back-to-back undefeated seasons with a win this weekend.

I have no idea why people would prefer an NFLer. Not saying it would not work just that it would be taking an unnecessary chance. Yes they know football but would that translate into great recruiting and be motivational and developmental at the college level?

I say follow the bama model pull out the check book and go after a known quantity in the college game.
1). Bob Stoops or Butch Davis
2). Gary Paterson
3). Will Muschamp
4). Kelly, Peterson, Dooley

He interviewed for the LSU job in 1986 when Arnsparger left.

it sounds good in theory but how would a superbowl ring help get a high school kid?

Shannahan will coach either the Cowboys or the Bears next season. The list mentioned is NOT good. The least attractive is " I had a Mental Breakdown and was afraid to come out of the dressing room" Butch Davis. Jack Del Rio is the man's man for the Tigers.
